I'm not Gaz Cooper, but if you don't mind, I'll take a whack at these... These are necessarily brief answers... I go into more detail in my newsletter. 1. Essential? Literally, nothing but your brains and typing ability. (with free Web 2.0 properties). Realistically? A $10 domain name, and a $7/mo hosting package. Online marketing is governed by the same rules everything else is.... if you don't want to spend money, you have to replace it with a lot of your own work. If you want to speed things up, you can throw some money at the problem (but there's a limit!) 2. Domain name keywords? This will largely be determined by your category. I believe that Gaz does it the same way I do - Microniche sites - so if you were targeting big screen TV's - "BigScreenTV.com" would be ideal. Google's 'External Keyword Tool' will be your primary resource. 3. Minimum searches? Actually, you want a *MAXIMUM* number of searches. Let's imagine, for example, that you choose "CreditCards.com" - I see 165,000 exact searches... this isn't *directly* correlated with the difficulty of being on page one, but it's very closely related to it. You'd spend years and mucho dinero to get that site to page one of Google. Now, *products* in that category, *NOW* you're looking for large numbers... everyone will give you different answers, but I'm happy even with 100 exact local searches per month - because that's *highly* converting traffic. 4. Wordpress. Sorry Joomla - but Wordpress simply has a larger installed base, and any problems you have are more easily answered about Wordpress than about Joomla. Just my opinion, of course. 5. Backlinks. Then some more backlinks. After that, a few more backlinks. 6. Yes. 7. I'm guessing you mean how soon will you start seeing money from your site. Somewhere between 30 days, and three months. In my experience, you'll start seeing sales about 4-8 weeks after you've finished your site. I'd advise learning how to cloak the traffic so you can really get going... I didn't know how to do it either until I figured that part out.
