One of the greatest mentors on DP forum, that could be the simplest designation that I can give you. As dyAdvisor has almost left the forum, now it's your 'duty' to help the craps [May be I...........................one of them. right?] Thanks for the thought provoking & informative posts and replies.
You definitely need to get your own blog or start your own website. Write a few samples and put them up for potential clients to see. Elance can be OKAY, although the good jobs are few and far between. You may also want to consider Constant Content, since you can sell your own articles and set your own prices for them. When signing up for accounts at sites such as Elance, be sure to upload a picture of yourself. Doing so will make you appear more "real" and trustworthy.
Ok firstly, you don't want to be spending ANY money, other than setting up a website if you don't have one. Don't waste your money on ebooks, real books, how to guides etc. Everything you need is free. Once you've done the basics of your website (contact details, professional looking picture of yourself, some original blog entries or articles), then you can sign up at writing sites such as hubpages and squidoo and get some advice on your writing and how to improve it. These pages may make you a few sales, but more importantly they will provide good backlinks to your website and should come up when people search your name. There are plenty of alternatives to these sites too if you don't particularly like them. Ask family and friends if they know anyone who needs some writing doing (also do a shout out on twitter or facebook). Maybe they have another skill they can trade with you, like web design, or you could give it to them for a reduced cost. Add the samples to your website. Next, go to affiliate forums and develop an account there. Build up lots of quality posts and offer your content-writing services cheaply. Use those samples on your website. Then extend to further websites and forums. Remember it's about building up your reputation. Once you've finished writing an article for a client, ask them if they can recommend you to a friend (even offer a discount). Also sign up at sponsored post sites like payperpost.com and sponsoredreviews.com. Get involved in groups, forums and online marketing Facebook pages so people know who you are. Leave valuable comments. Never underestimate the value of guest posting. As well as getting valuable links to your site, you can also promote yourself and your work to sites with big readerships. There are plenty of good writing blogs out there like urbanmusewriter.com and copybloggers.com which accept guest posts. Myblogguest.com is a good place to look. Also try searching job sites for temporary or freelance work (not specifically freelance sites). Even if they are for a short period of time they can give you valuable jobs. Find out if there are any writing or web groups that get together in your city/area and get to know people. Do a talk, or get involved in discussions.
I believe he is talking about copywriting, not article (content) writing. And if he does not know anything about it, then, yes, he needs to read books and websites on the subject written by REAL copywriters. Not from bozos who think they are, like the ones over at the warrior forum. Here are four good sources to get started: http://www.makepeacetotalpackage.com/ http://www.marketingbullets.com/archive.htm http://www.carlinecole.com/default.htm http://www.awaionline.com/
Forget the first link I put down, makepeacetotalpackage. Because he mst have had a falling out with a partner, or something else, he had to take all of the articles and interviews down.
I had never heard of Carline Cole before, so I checked out her site and found some interesting stuff. Her CopyStar E-zine has 37 articles about various copywriting topics. All of those are written in very engaging way that I wish I could write. Thank you Perry for mentioning her. http://www.carlinecole.com/copystar/copystar.htm
No problem. Of all the A-list copywriters out there, she is my favorite. She can write up a piece from a windstorm of personality and unorthodox ways. Is it no wonder she gets $25,000 per 20 plus page project (like a magalog), and she has a waiting list nearly a year long. Though she does not have any articles, her daughter has followed in her footsteps with her own brand of style... ...http://www.copymillmarketing.com/index.html Here's another A-list writer with his own articles: http://www.marketingbullets.com/archive.htm So many ask for good copy books to read, but books do not even compare to such sites. Just from studying these sites, one can actually be an ok to a very good writer in the end.
http://www.infomarketingblog.com/ There you can get inspired and learn from the copywriting masters (Who are usually also masters of human psychology) of times gone by.
Perry, I know what you mean but it still doesn't make any sense. What I'm saying is what qualifies an inexperienced person (even those who think they have a brain) to put such finality into something they have no experience in? You're implying that you were just too intelligent as an inexperienced person that you didn't even need to experiment with the technique (as it should be done) and adapt it to make it work for you.
I would have thought that this is self explanatory, but, once again, I keep forgetting where I am at. Once again...(is this the third time?)...the legitimate and good-paying offers there are VERY far and few between. All it takes is to...LOOK! That takes experience? .. That takes intelligence? lol damn, son. I stated in my earlier post: I'm still waiting.
Do you want to LEARN copywriting, or are you looking for copywriting jobs? If you're new, definitely start learning by studying good ads. Get on the email list for Agora, Boardroom Inc, companies like that and look at the promotions they send you for products. Study the ads, the selling points, headlines, emotional hot-buttons, etc. Check out Gary Bencivenga's Bencivenga Bullets (they're free) and you'll learn some great tips as well from him. Most of all though, get started practicing writing your own copy and build a portfolio of samples. Like any other skill, you get better with practice.
