How do I start a directory?

    Hi,
I am toying with the idea of starting a health directory as an adjunct to my health site. I am pretty new to this stuff so any ideas on how I would do this such as:
Where do I go to even start one?
    How much should it cost?
Do I build it like I would my website or is it totally different?
If anyone can explain as much as possible I would appreciate it.

I started to include on my site a practitioner referral "directory" but I am not sure if I should leave it as is or to make a directory like all the nice ones I see on DP.

    Thank you,
    newbie

I have spent hours looking for a directory script that worked and best of all FREE. Search for PhpLD and goto there site. They have a free and pay version and then just search for themes and there are 1000 available for free.

Hit there forum if you want to find someone to pay to do it all.

i too have been toying with the idea of making a directory; upon playing round with my old domaisn i have just noticed one has gone from PR0 to PR4 and a number of others from PR 0 to PR3.

The domain i would use to make the directory, the pr4 is called usjobforum.com - its for an old job site i used to run; i have a feeling it would be a good name for an employment related directoyr (also own Canadian, British, Irish job forum names too which only have prs of 1-2, but hey better than nowt)

What would the process be in getting a directory up and running? would it be a case fo finding some software then worry about getting users after that.

My idea situation would be that instead of recruiters linking to their homepages, although that would be an option they would add links to individual jobs thus givign them more links and more or less turning the site into a job search engine.

Which software would be suggest using for this. Also on the issue of making a few $ from it what approaches would be taken, would it adsense, abrite etc?

    thanks in advance

Thanks guys. Buy I am soooo new to this I am not sure where to begin. Should I register a domain with my current host (homestead.com) and then find a compatible software directory to work with it, or don't register it with them and find a specific directory host to host it?

Can I do it without software and use an online directory template to make it easier for me?
    Thanks.

If your adding the directory to an existing site, you can use a subdomian like directory.yoursite.com. Installing free phpld script is not too hard, but if you struggle someone here will do it for a reasonable amount. Then promote, maintain and develop alongside the current site.

    Thanks DD.
I checked and homestead.com does not support php. But either way I decided I want this to be a seperate site from my other one and to be a straight up directory.

So where can I find a low price host for one that supports a directory template which I think I may be able to get for free that Pluto (thanks!) suggested.

Not a bad blog post, but would be nice if you gave a little more than just a link in your post. ;)

Does the directory quality depend on the number of entries, PR or quality of websites submitted?

Yes. That is what is all about. Only quality no duplicated sites, listed in the proper categories. If there are many, you have from where to choose, thus you are a good resource=> value

    (1) download php link directory (phpld)
    (2) search for a template. (Google phpld templates) there are many free template providers
    (3) Install the script and template on a domain/sub domain.
    (4) start adding links (you can announce your directory in this forum)
    (5) work hard on promotion and SEO (this can help you to get targeted visitors)
