How do I shrink gifs?

I made a banner advertisement and it's 750K...the website owner told me it needs to be much smaller than that for it to load on his users' computers, which is understandable...

how can I shrink this 750k gif to be 200k or less without resizing it or taking away from the graphics all that much? is there a way?

Filters are used to apply different effects. Go to top menu in Photoshop and you will find a link "Filters"... then play with those. But don't try them on your banners. It will increase the size dramatically.

What is the size of the banner? Not file size.

Have you grouped the layers or not? and how are you exporting the layers to imageready?

Just pressing the "Edit in Imageready" button or first merging the groups and then exporting to IR?

glitto-- the dimesions of the banner i made is 120x600...and I haven't grouped the layers--how could I do that now that I have individual layers of things that I don't want to mess with? What does grouping them mean exactly? I assume you mean combining some of the layers, right?

And yes, all I'm doing to edit them in ImageReady is just pressing the Edit in ImageReady quick button....

Nitros-- my gif file is 750k, which is too big for that site-- I already tried. :)

Yes grouping means combining the layers.

    Ok now do it carefully.

Go to your Group Layers and just press Ctrl + E, it will merge all the layers in that group and make it only 1 layer.

Do it with all your groups. Once you are done only then press Edit in Imageready button and then save your banner. I hope it will be less in size then :)

Remember: Don't save PSD file, because you have grouped the layers. If you save you can't edit them later.

glitto-- okay, I don't think that works because I just tried doing that and when I Edit it in ImageReady the layers that I had in PSD no longer are animated....is that supposed to happen? let me see if I'm doing this right...I opened my PSD file and grouped the layers by creating sets and then pressing Ctrl + E to merge each of the sets---is that right?

Use Photoshop to save your images...

you can compress a gif down to much smaller size

make sure you "Save for web and devices"

there are several parameters you can set (# of colors and dither) to get a better image size while still maintaining quality

if you want I will do this for you send me a pm
