How do I setup a Mailling List

    Hey there,

I hope this is the right place to post this and I know it may be a bit of a noobish question but please try helping me out :D

Anyway, I want to setup a mailling list. Basically on my site it says: Type in your email address to be added to the list... blah blah.

They type it in, press OK and it adds or w/e. Then there's a list of email addresses for me of people and I can freely email all of them at the same time.

Before you jump to conclusions off my net knowledge... I can make sites, do a lil bit of coding, do SEO and some other stuff, but it actually surprises me to how clueless I am to setup one of these lists and how it works.

E.g. are there free places to get the code from the net?
do i need to use an email client like outlook or somethin... etc

Also is there some tutorial on the net for it? I googled 'setting up a mailling list' and didn't quite understand some of the sites I looked at :p

    Any help is appreciated.

    Thanks.

There's a number of free php based mailing list scripts. One of them comes bundled with Fantastico I believe. There's also autoresponder services you can use which allow you to bulk email your list.

Yeah, probably Constant Contact as well.
Though after signing up for it, I received way too many cold calls on my cell phone afterwards that I did not want to get from them.

    Google this instead: bulk email

There are plenty of software programs you can buy.

I would check with your webhost to see the limits on sending emails. Many webhosts limit how many you can send at a time to avoid crashing their servers.

If you have a large list, you probably need to go with a hosted email service.

    Some to look at are:

    www.constantcontact.com

    www.intellicontact.com

Both of these are fairly easy to use, have preset templates that you can customize, and other features.

Both also have a free trial so you can try before you buy!

I should also mention I had success with using Dada Mail as well, which can be found at mojo.skazat.com and is free to download. It's a CGI based script.

for those that have mailing lists here, when people fill out their email address and click 'ok'. what happens to their email address? does it get sent to your email and you just add it manually to a list, or does it automatically get added to some list on the net, do you send an autoresponder email or something? thanks.
