How do i set up my dedicated server?

Discussion in 'Site & Server Administration' started by killaklown, Apr 6, 2007.

I just purchased a dedicated server, how do i set it up?

    I have:

    Primary IP Address
    Secondary IP Address(es)
    Gateway
    Subnet Mask
    Primary DNS
    Initial username
    Password
    Root password
    OS Load: Ubuntu Server 6.06

I have used the primary and secondary IP addresses as my nameservers already (i think i use those).

What do I do now? Is there any guide on the internet telling you how to do this?

How many sites do you plan to host on it?
Do you plan to install a control panel?
How much experience do you have with administrating linux boxes?

There's a free control panel called webmin which makes setting up everything easier. http://www.webmin.com/

Plan on having around 10 sites after a month. (right now it will have about 5)

I do plan on installing a control panel.

    None.

Edit: webmin is being installed on my server by my host.

I'd then suggest you to get some sysadmin expert to do the initial configuration and setup for you. Ask your dedi box provider if they will do initial setup and server hardening for some fees...or hire a system admin.

As I had said, webmin is a good free control panel. If you wanna go to paid options, DirectAdmin is the best IMO. Consult with your dedi provider if they will do it for you.

I wonder if Ubuntu (based on debian) is a good choice as most control panels are not 100% compatible in comparison to redhat, fedora or centos.

Ubuntu is a poor server. It's great for administrating servers and learning about the Linux Filesystems etc, but it's no good as a standalone server.

If it's not too late get them to install CentOS, is very very stable. Fedora Core has always been good for me but they update it a lot.

Yeah, I have Xubuntu on a laptop its more of a Desktop product than a server product. There's a lot of confusion between server and desktop products.

Ubuntu is popular because it has a nice interface and some really cool apps. I've even heard a lot of people download the server edition onto their desktop and ask if they can then install the GUI, lol, why not install the GUI then install apache etc.

Anyway, ask them nicely and they should change the os for you, otherwise use the link I gave you ;)

Try http://www.surfspeedyservers.com/, they're very good so far. They have a promo on for $1, yep $1 and you get a 40GB hd 400Gb b/w and 512mb ram, its sounds like madness, but its not :S I've checked the system out with webim and it says I have a 600mhz share of an amd64

their new site is just http://www,surfspeedy.com

    Try GoDaddy VPS

They allow you to build a custom server based on your needs, and you can see how high you can go on specs based on the price you get.

Yeah, for a dedi thats normally a good idea. I'm looking for one with 512mb and 2.0ghz processer just to run a couple of sites. You can pick them up for $50 on another popular forum, i'm just waiting for someone to break and hand out some lifetime discounts.
