When creating the key words meta tags, I do not want to get busted for stuffing. I want to know how those are read...I guess.

does the exact phrase matter or just the combonation of words in the phrase?
lets say my phrase is word1 word2 word3. If some one does a search for
word3 word1 word2 how much of a difference in results is there likely to be with regards to setting up meta tags?

lets say I have a custom home builder located in marietta Ga. he wants to focus on these key words/phrases: custom builder, new homes marietta

Which is the proper way to set these up:

    1. custom, builder, new, homes, marietta

    2. custom builder, custom, builder, new homes marietta, new homes, marietta, new, homes, marietta

    3. custom builder, new homes marietta

Unfortunately keyword tags dont' contribute a lot to your search engine positioning these day, however it's usually best to use the exact phrase(s) you are wanting to match. Look at the site that is already in the top search results for your keyword(s) for clues as well.

Use the page title tag and H1, H2 header tags along with underlining and bolding of keywords in your content for better results.

Also name your graphics the same way along with their ALT text descriptions. (Careful here, make sure still are descriptive with the graphic name and ALT text so dont' use just the keyword)

    Good luck!

Bolding/underlining your main keywords randomly in an article isn't reccomended :p

Can't say I've seen any evidence that supports not using bolding, underlining and italicising but would like to see some if available. I analyze top ranking sites for specific keywords almost non-stop and this is a common theme along with those mentioned previously. I will elaborate more and say that you should limit it to 1 or 2 times on a page and not repeat it continuosly in your content. This may be what R-ampage was eluding to.

Something else to consider is your keyword density. In other words don't include the keyword too many times as it relates to the overall content. You are generally looking for a keyword density of 2-7%. Any higher than that and search engines could consider you to be a keyword spammer.

These rules just attempt to ensure that your content is really content and not just keyword focused garbage. If you were to sit down and write a thoughtful topical article with no regards to SEO it would probably contain all of the elements mentioned.
