How do I set it up?

I have tried setting up adsense to use on my site but it doesn't work.

I go through the options choosing size, and colour and then get code to use on site. I put the code into my site and all that appears is an extra space where it should be, but nothing is there. It's the same wherever I put it on my site, no ads show up its just blank.

I'm also getting the American version, where it says how much money I've earnt it says $0.00 instead of £0.00.

Generally, you need to place the adsense code just before the </body> tag in your html coding

I've put it into a backup of my live website but there is just a blank space at the top next to the banner - http://mail.dfsv25.com/~qdfwfnwh/forums/

it takes a few minutes for the ad to activate sometimes with this stupid new code format.

OK, don't take their advice, clearly clueless...you put the code where you want the ad to show, I don't recommend right before the end body tag.

Sorry Marklcfc, my bad - but hardly clueless - only distracted at the time of writing due to another piece of jscript i been working on that involved being positioned near the </body>

Dbmasters is correct - it can go anywhere you want.
