How do I register an expired domain?

There is a domain I want, whois shows the expiration date as: 17 Apr 2010. But when I search for the domain, lets say at godaddy, it says the domain is already taken.

If its expired shouldn't it be available to the public again?

Any way I can get the domain?

P.S - Although the details are available I'm not looking to contact the owner.

Normal Grace period is 30 days but i had heard about some registrars that they hold back the expired domain indefinitely
You can also use backorder facility at godaddy

You should wait Redemption Period it takes 30 days and after this period starts Pending Delete period and it takes about 6 days. BTW you should visit https://auctions.godaddy.com/. If owner don't renew domain name Godaddy sells them on Godaddy Auction.

Don't bother. Godaddy Backorder doesn't work.

Thanks mirturk, so it means if the owner does not renew the domain it should be available for registration in 30+6 days? The thing is the domain is not registered at godaddy.

I'll keep a look out in about 36 days after expiry date.

Add 60days after the expiration date and then you can start checking ;)

    Thanks everyone.

I was always under the impression that I could register a domain on the expiry date. Looks like I will have to wait a lot longer to get the domain.

I read an article that said it was exactly 75 days from the Expiration Date.

It's usually somewhere between 60-75, it might depend on ICANN and the tld.
