I have been after this domain for the last 5 years and it has finally expired on 9 february 2009

What can I do to register this domain now that it has expired?

Write email to check with the registrar if you have the chance to get it back?
if can't, then you should wait about 70 ~ 75 days, the domain name will become available to the public for register.

I never had it in the first place so I guess its just a matter of waiting 70~75 days before it goes public again and hope the guy who registered it for 10 years doesnt register it again lol

Backordering might help get it safely.

I believe the is currently redemption period because it expired on 9 Feb 2009 and today is 9 March 2009 which is exactly one month.

I think you may back order the domain and the chances are that you may even get it. You can find more information on domain back ordering at http://ruchie.com/go.php?id=backorderdomains

It is much better to Backorder the Domain as soon as possible.. you should not take a risk if its a Domain you really want. Many service providers run scripts which catch the Domain name as soon as it gets deleted if its a high traffic Domain name.. Backorder to be safe :)

You can try GoDaddy's or NetworkSolutions's backordering service to buy the domains that have been expired. However, these services do not guarantee that they will retain the domain once it has been become available.
