    Hi,

There are many many ways to promote your website. Some of it depends on what kind of website you have.

1.) Use social sites such as Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, StumbleUpon, and YouTube. Just make sure you have great content.

2.) Find forums that are related to your site. For example, if your website is about online gaming, join the gaming forums and become a part of the community there. Then you can promote your website in your signature. As long as you share good information (don't just spam), people will click your signature link.

3.) SEO (Search Engine Optimization). This is how your site will naturally be found in the search engines such as Google, Yahoo, and Bing. You can learn the basics of SEO from reading in the section of this forum or check out SEO blogs such as SearchEngineLand.Com.

They actually have a basic guide at: http://searchengineland.com/guide/what-is-seo

On the other hand, you don't have to do SEO yourself. If you have money to invest, you can hire professionals to do this for you. Even if you choose to hire someone, it still helps for you to have basic knowledge of SEO because that will help you hire the right person.

4.) Pay-Per-Click Advertising - Each of the search engines, as well as Facebook, have their own paid advertising programs. You can do a Google search to learn more about Pay-Per-Click. Honestly, this is not something I would recommend for beginners. It really depends on what type of website you have. If you don't know what you are doing, you can lose a ton of money from this.

There are tons of other ways to promote, but I'll leave room for other people to chime in :)

what kind of website is it?

Forum marketing in your niche will get quick traffic, article marketing for longer term traffic, social media marketing for search traffic and good links to your site. Video's can help get lots of traffic and are really good for promotion.

It really depends on your niche.

    Hey there!

I think that whilst there are many ways to pay for your website to take off (ads and whatnot), social media is a HUGE plus that could significantly bump your site up in terms of consumer engagement, credibility and even SEO and Google search rankings. More often than not, it's free! Never underestimate the power of simple Facebook engagement and Twitter followings.

    1. Build up your brand on Facebook
Create a Facebook page. Update it with your brand logo, information and contact details. Make sure that anyone who visits your Facebook page will be able to understand what you're selling, and what your brand is all about. Get the people who would support you to Like and Share your page (this can consist of your family members or friends for a start). Everyone needs to start from the ground up so don't worry about looking tiny and insignificant for the time being, have the guts to keep pushing and socializing and making your presence felt online.

    2. Facebook social engagement
Do not purchase Likes, for the sake of amping up the number on your Facebook page. Yes, the figure "600 Likes" looks way more appealing than say, "6 Likes" were to look, but you wouldn't want these figures to be full of empty Likes that you can't build upon. Target the people who would be interested in what you've got to say. When these people like you, they are at a much higher position to share and talk about your page. Be friendly and engaging. Talk to your consumers like a human being, not an automated robot. Reply to their queries and thank them when it's necessary. Creating smiles can go a long, long way.

    3. Twitter
Follow Twitter users who have similar interests to you. Target the demographics that you fit. You can even search Twitter with specific keywords that would pertain and relate to what your brand is about, or what you sell. Other users who tweet, or follow such topics, are much more likely to follow you and to hear what you have to say. Talk to people. Engage in conversations and you'll find yourself looking at a bunch of follow requests if you've done it all the right way.

    4. Instagram, Pinterest, etc.
If your website or brand sells products with great visual appeal (like handpainted portraits or cutesy baby clothing), jump onboard the Instagram or Pinterest bandwagon. Use hashtags to have them be easily tracked through keyword searches and trends. Lots of companies with visual capacities in their products have their images fly on such social media platforms.

Let us know what exactly your website is about! Maybe we can help you even more from there :)

Pinterest can bring a lot of traffic if your site lends itself to great pictures as mentioned above.
Pinterest doubled the traffic to my detox blog in a couple of months.

Tumblr is hot at the moment too.

I think, your main goal should be to do SEO of your site, if this is the case then you have to start slowly, do slow but natural link building it would work of course, there is no doubt to it....
