How do I prevent people from renting my product and stealing it?

I'm starting a rental site and I'm not sure how to stop people from renting my product and just stealing it. I know someone could get one of those Visa gift cards and I'm sure there are other ways I can't think of. Does anyone know any service that stops this or some kind of background check program?

I would have them sign a contract and make sure you have all of their information before renting them out. You can also do credit checks to ensure they aren't scum bags to begin with.

If you are renting cell phones then first take full security for your product and only then rent it.

I would take the value of the phone as a deposit - when they bring it back they get the deposit back.
Whether this would put people off is another matter, possibly the amount you take as a deposit would have to be looked at.

For example, to hire a car I would have to put down a £100 ($200) deposit.
Now I know thats not enough for me to buy a car but its enough for me to return the car and get my deposit back!

bring the car back in a reasonable state you mean even a ugly car with 4 flat tires is worth more then 200$ :p

btw did you do a VERY good market research for this service ? i dont now exactly whats your service is but renting cell phones anno 2008 doesnt seems like a goldmine you get a cell phone for like 30$ now a days !
