How Do I Optimize A Web Page for Certain Keywords?

Hey there, I'm trying to learn IM and could use a basic explanation of how web pages are optimized for certain keywords.

Let's say I'm targeting a group of keywords in a certain niche and I want to optimize the site for those keywords.
As an example consider the main keyword "binoculars".
Other keywords of interest are nikon binoculars, pentax binoculars, zoom binoculars, night vision binoculars, discount binoculars, compact binoculars, digital binoculars, how binoculars work.

In building the site, would you setup 1 web page for each keyword? With articles focused on that 1 keyword?
Also, is it possible to cover several keywords with 1 page? Is it advisable?

Having 1 page for each keyword would require a lot of content for even a reasonable size niche. What is the solution to this seeming dilema? Wow, a 500 keyword group would call for a 500 page site! Please help me to correctly understand this. Thanks.

    Tony.
