Just goto the google keyword tool
    https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal

Now check for your specific keyword then use this keyword in your page that its density is higher as compare to all other keywords but lower then the 5%. You can check the keyword density at
    http://www.webconfs.com/keyword-density-checker.php

Now place this keyword on some important locations of your page like in title tag, meta tags and h1,h2 tags and also here you use this keyword in body tag so its optional to bold them because then search engine thinks it is important word.

But now still you will not be rank good for this keyword till you will get some good backlinks from the other webpages for the same keyword

By putting it in the title, url, and description. Those things will help when ranking in search engines with certain keywords. Also, if you are just starting, you can first try to target those that are not so competitive keywords.

The best way to increase keyword performance is to link back to your website from other relevant websites, but it is important to do it properly.

Below are a few SEO tips that may help you increase the search engine position of the keywords that the website is targeting.

    • Link back to the site using anchor text use the same keywords you are trying to target.

    • When posting back links to a website, be sure to link to a page within your website that is very relevant to the text of the anchor tag.

    • The anchor text on the page where back links are posted should contain the same keywords that are within the title tag of the page on website that is linked to.

    • It is also very important to have a website that is optimized well for important internal SEO factors.

If the website is not optimized properly internally, it will be more of a challenge to get good search engine position for the keywords and/or keyword phrases that you desire.

In my option: Time spent insuring proper internal search engine optimization, saves time and money when it comes to optimizing a website externally.

Yes that is high... 18% means basically every 5th word is the same keyword. That is TOTALLY too high. I would suggest the content of the page read naturally which should yield a 1-3% keyword density typically.

Focus more on the density of your keywords within each of the HTML elements that are key on-page ranking factors - <title>, <h1>, <h2>s - as well as the keyword density within link text used to link to that page (for both internal AND external links that you create).

Also try to use your targeted keyword/keyword phrase near the BEGINNING of those same key HTML elements instead of the end. The search engines generally consider words near the beginning of these elements as more important than those at the end... similar to the way they consider content at the top of the page more important than content at the bottom of the page, only on a smaller scale at the element level.

In other words, if you want your home page to rank for "anti aging" then do NOT make your <title> element something like "Get the best tips on anti-aging". In this case, "anti" has a keyword density of 16.67% and "aging" has a keyword density of 16.67%. AND they are at the END of the <title>. Instead, simply make the <title> BE your targeted keyword phrase - <title>Anti Aging</title>. Now "anti" has a 50% keyword density, and "aging" has a 50% keyword density. AND the phrase is at the beginning of the <title>.

Pay attention to similar density and positions within the elements of your <h1> and <h2>s. It's less important for these factors since they carry less and less weight compared to <title>, but I would still recommend that you NOT make a long <h1> since it's probably the 2nd most important on-page factor for most search engines. Don't use something like "Get answers to your questions about the long awaited anti aging debate". Again "anti" and "aging" would then only have a keyword density of about 8.33% each. Make it something "Anti Aging Information" which would give them a 33.33% density... 4x more dense.

If you concentrate on focusing the major ranking factors on the page on your targeted keyword phrase(s) then you don't HAVE to stuff keywords into your content and make your content read unnaturally in order to try to get decent rankings. You can have great content w/ low keyword densities that users will enjoy reading and still have great on-page SEO because you focused your on-page SEO efforts on the ranking factors that get you the most bang for your buck (<title>, <h1>, <h2>, keyword rich page name, etc.) and made the most important page element for the user (the actual content) still be written with the user in mind, naturally.

I agree that 18% is much too high. It looks spammy. I've had good results with 3%. That's 3 for every 100 words. If you write naturally it pretty much takes care of itself.

As far as off-page SEO or linkbuilding the easiest way is to visit relevant blogs or forums and include the link back to your website. Instead of putting your name in the 'name' filed use the keyword you want to rank for.

So for the 'Chicken Recipes' keyword your name would be "Chicken Recipes" your URL would be "http://myurl.com" and the add an intelligent comment. Most bloggers love comments just add something of value to their site and most will allow give you a nice backlink.

    Sweta you're pretty :)

Back to the thread: How about submitting to some quality directories? To rank for competitive keywords, you would not only have to promote the site extensively (and even go for paid advertising) but also will you have to post valuable and unique content...on a regular basis :)

This also depends on the type of site in question: WP blog, forum, directory or a general Web site(...)

As per view that your keyword "Chicken Recipes" has not much competitive,

if you can analysis the competitors and also you can go through off page methods which is great for your keyword ranking in major search engines.

If you want to increase the PR you should take the good backlink from good PR sites which have good backlink. Your targeted keyword should be in anchor text on that particular sites. Always use one way or three way link for your sites,
Never take any backlink on that site which have already having lot of sites on resource or link page.

    have nice day

You need a complete optimization of your website based on your targeted keyword. after that do link building and other off page optimization techniques to increase page rank and rankings.

for off page seo you can do article submissions, directory submissions, social bookmarking, blog comments, web 2.0 submissions etc.
