Video marketing is a proven method of getting traffic as is social media - but as with all traffic getting techniques you need to choose your keywords carefully. Check the 'Results' figure in the top right hand corner of Google (for example) to see how many other people are competing for that keyword - make sure you can realistically compete for the first page. Also if the 'Results' are too low then that particular keyword is not viable enough to generate traffic to your site. Use google adwords 'keyword tool' to find out how many people search the 'keyword', obviously here you are looking for high volumes.
Article submission is a good way to get more quality back-links. If you don't want to write the articles, I have a suggestion which I got from a fairly successful blogger. Go to oDesk (look it up ) and register free. You can get good quality articles for around $1.60 if you order 10 or more. I intend to use this myself. Then submit these every day to different directories. Hope that helps.
Some of the best methods that have really improved my traffic are SEO, article marketing, blogging, social networking and Pay Per Click. Most of this strategies need a learning curve. Pick one or two and focus on it till you master it before moving to another. Best Wishes John

i think we have to maximize Facebook for increasing traffic. FB is most visited sites after Google. try to make group about our site in FB. it's work for builiding huge traffic thanks
This is a tough problem to solve, I running a site for five years and I am still working on my site's traffic almost every day.
I find that whatever method to bring in traffic works for a while. After that, the traffic slows down again. The worst is traffic from social bookmarking. A few hundreds come one day, and stay just 10 to 20 seconds. Traffic flows back to normal after that. The only reliable traffic is from search engines.
Try creating videos and posting them to video sharing sites like YouTube. Include backlinks to your pages that the video subject matter is talking about.
Since your into guides and tips, try submitting articles or uploading documents on sites like slideshare.net
You only need 2 things, good content and perseverance. My blog i in a competetive niche, and I have been getting between 100-200 visits a day after 6 months, I want it to be more but i know the only way to get more is to stick at it, I hear so many bloggers give up after 3 months because they realise it actually takes time and work, hence why only 10% of blogs actually make a success of it. KEEP AT IT AND DON'T GIVE UP!!
