How do I harness Technorati and its 'authority'?

Discussion in 'General Marketing' started by Morgan Coudray, Oct 13, 2008.

    Guys, gals, marketers,
I have a blog and have been submitting to Technorati on a regular basis. However, given that the blog is still very young, I have virtually no "authority". I understand that 1 authority point equals to 1 link forwarding to your website.
I got many links from forums and blog posts and so on, but my authority does not increase.
Do you guys know anything about Technorati and ways to get visibility on it?

    Cheers

In terms of keyword authority, you may have million backlinks, but you can still have a very low authority. It depends how you build your backlinks. Did you use the right anchor for making your backlinks?

Technorati Authority is a little more complicated than you might think:

    - Authority only comes from links to your blog from blogs that are also indexed by Technorati. They do not automatically index blogspot.com or wordpress.com free blogs, so if your backlinks are from one of those blogs, you may need to suggest that the blogger sign up for a Technorati account.

    - they only include a link from a particular blog once, so even if you have 10 links from a particular blog, that will only increase your authority by 1.

    - they only count backlinks from the past 180 days (6 months). You need to be continually getting new backlinks from different indexed blogs to increase and maintain your authority.

If you think your authority should be higher, check and make sure that the backlinks come from blogs that Technorati indexes. If that is true and the links were in the past 6 months, you might want to post on their help forum.

Thanks for your constructive feedback guys! As a young blogger, how would you recommend, that I go about getting backlinks? Should I approach bloggers directly or do it more subtly by backlinking them first?

There is no reason why you can't do both.

I've had the most success in backlinking to B-list bloggers (100-500 in Authority). They are usually small enough to pay attention to who is linking to them, but large enough to actually send some traffic in your direction.

If you do approach bloggers directly, do it very politely, and realize that big-name bloggers probably get lots and lots of such requests. They are most likely to either direct you to their information for advertisers or to ignore you. The more mid-list ones are more approachable, but I wouldn't straight-out ask for a link. Instead say that you enjoy their blog (and why), and explain why they might be interested in checking out yours. That's most likely to work if what you blog about is relevant to what they blog about.

And, of course, the more traffic you get, the more likely someone will link to you, assuming that you posts are interesting and unique. Try social bookmarking like Digg and StumbleUpon to give your blog more exposure. You can submit posts yourself, but you should also be sure to make it easy for readers to submit them too. Something like an AddThis (http://www.addthis.com/) button can encourage people to do this.

And don't get hung up on Technorati numbers. They really don't mean that much in the greater scheme of things. Traffic is what you want!

Do trackbacks and comment links from technorati-ranked blogs build authority? IFF they do, you might want to focus on commenting and trackbacking on blogs that show up in technorati, and do it on some kind of a schedule. If that strategy does NOT build authority it might still - gradually - send some traffic your way.

Sounds too Whitehat for me, though. ;)
