I'm a developer by day and am looking to bring in some extra money -- I'm usually hacking away at something on the weekends/nights as it is -- might as well be profitable. I've tried my hand at making some sites in the past but generating traffic has always been hard for me so I really haven't done anything in a LONG time -- waiting for 3-6 months while you build traffic sucks and I usually get bored before then. I see a LOT of sites being offered in the BTS forum but a lot of them just look horrible and yet people still bid on them. I'm really turned off by the idea of creating blogs that are filled with horrible content. So I'm thinking that it might be wise to grab a couple of low-hanging sites that suck but still bring in traffic and develop them further so that I can start building up return traffic then use ads to generate money -- who knows eventually have some software to sell on a monthly basis or something. Has anyone had success porting crap websites to full-fledged community based websites that are profitable and maybe could give me some inspirational stories or constructive help? I believe I'm really good at developing software so I don't have to rely on a CMS or anything retarded like that. Should I pick out 5-6 different sites first and see which one gets a little bit of traffic? Lastly, what's a good starting budget given my abilities and knowledge? What price range of sites am I going to want to look at? I'm thinking a good VPS will run me $20-$30/month which I'll just eat the cost of for the time being.
