I dont mean for the question to sound so general but I am really frustrated. I try applying the techniques from these forums but I just don't get any visitors. I try to weed out what is Adsense techniques. I truly just want to answer some chemistry questions online and have some of my students reply in forums. No adsense , no fees.
Send spam myspace bulletins for a start. Join forums that are related to your website and post there with a link on your sig.
learn the basics of on-page SEO optimization. get some incoming links from related sites: this will help in search engines as well as for getting direct traffic. try to create viral content if possible. if you have great content, the site usually promotes itself.
well there isnt really a lot of content yet. it is mostly to help people in chemistry. I am not done with it but the forums are at forums.mychemistrytutor.com I am having an ask me script built so people can ask questions. Thanks for any and all advice. I want it to be a very legitimate site so I dont want to post in a bunch of random directories. I have heard that SMF forums are hard to get indexed but I liked the look of it.
I like the idea for your forum, plus I think it's a great name. I would have some articles done, chemistry tutorials, say a few basic and a couple more advanced, to get people to visit the site and then drive them to ask questions in the forum. If you can get someone to answer a few questions quickly that will also help. Don't underestimate using local media where you live to get people to visit your site, especially if there are some high schools or colleges near by.
yes I like the name also. I have had it a while but really dont know what to do with it. I like the idea of free forums to answer questions. I would be able to answer the questions fairly quickly. The problem with chemistry is not being able to post math and chemical equations in an effective manner. But I am willing to try. I am trying to work on the main site but as with all my website ideas , I just don't know what to say or how to make it look. I have no natural knack for that.
Does someone knows this is true? Maybe want to switch from SMF to vbulletin. Are the vbulletin forums much better?
"I truly just want to answer some chemistry questions online and have some of my students reply in forums" So you're a teacher, and this site is for your students? In which case, I would say that the best way to market would be to get in touch with the local educational bodies, and tell them about the site. Encourage them to spread the word about it, and if they won't (or they're rubbish at it) then start writing to schools yourself. Send them a poster each, and perhaps offer a prize for the school who produces the most student sign ups. Before you do that though, make sure that when they come to the site - they have something to look at. Fill it with content and make it look nice.
no I havent tried those yet. I am not sure how they work and I don't really have any articles to send. I am just having a hard time coming up with a plan to "launch" the site. I think it would be very popular and useful to thousands of people. I could write tutorials I guess but those are a dime a dozen. As far as content and making it look nice. It is the bane of my existance. I never know what to say or exactly how it should look. I know I should just launch and then tweak but I end up just staring at my site for days. Guess I don't want to seem stupid. Any advice is very much appreciated.
If you just want your own students to visit your site that's easy just post extra credit questions on the site. As far as promoting your site to other people, get in contact with other teachers and ask for help. Most schools and colleges have websites now. Ask or beg for as many education links as you can get. If you have good content on chemistry most teachers shouldn't have a problem linking to you. The most important thing to do is to keep adding more content about chemistry. Not only will it impress people who run education sites, but googlebot will eat it all up. Then when people type in a chemistry question into google one of your pages will have a greater chance of showing up in the listings.
nothing wrong with paying for promoting as long as it gets you an ROI. this will generally only work for sites that sell something or affiliate landing pages though, not your everyday average hobby / adsense site.
You really think people hanging out on Myspace are going to give the time of day to a site on chemistry? That's like when telemarketers call you when you're eating dinner, does it matter what they are selling?
iam 100% sure nowadays poeple from social bookmarking are not clicking adsense.so SEO only works perfect.
even if social bookmarkting & digg type sites don't convert, they DO give you publicity. if you have a great service and it gets on the front page of digg, all of the sudden hundreds of thousands of people have heard about your site. some (it doesn't even need to be a high percentage, based on those numbers) will tell their friends about your site, or blog about it, or link to it from their website, etc.
The answer is really simple - dont follow what other people tell you! I know it sounds a bit crazy but most people online - way above 90% - dont know how to get visitors either. So its a bit like the blind leading the blind In general you have to find things out for yourself, your market, your niche, your product etc - simply by testing and watching the results If you follow what everyone else says then Im afraid you will achieve very little So certainly find out what everyone else is doing - at least then you will know what not to do
