Hi I have an information website on football (I can't put link on yet) with all up to date scores, videos, news, high lights etc. Its a great site for any football fan but I need to know how to direct traffic there. Is there any free ways of advertising?? I would appreciate any advice.
Meta Tags and Keywords, put the site in your sig in all forums you are signed up for, back links, sign up for blogs and write about football and mention your site, myspace, facebook and much more.

I think to promote a sports-related site, you want to take advantage of word-of-mouth advertising or putting up a sign on your car. If you commute a lot, then you'll get great exposure. But in addition to that, listen to the folks here and try social bookmarking sites, write unique articles and get link exchanges with sports-related sites. Hope that helps!
You might want to try and do something viral as well. If you have the funds, hold a contest of some sort and let the word spread around. Football is a huge topic and it shouldn't take long to spread the word.
SEO is king for consistent traffic. I think with sports getting yourself known and the name of your site known through just being an expert and having good content. 95% of sports websites I go to I type in the URL directly such as ESPN, Sherdog, etc. So I would definitely focus on that aspect of it because that can help you but Digg and Stumble are good for a small amount of traffic but to get a good amount its about like hitting the lottery.
