I would suggest reading the material provided my google itself first.
Also, I recommend using their keyword tool to get help in finding keywords and CPC.

Just jump in and try it... cautiously!

Like most things, Google leads you through the process and gives you help along the way. Just set you daily max spend and cpc very low while you're experimenting.

My top tip: use Long Tail keywords ;)

I assume that you have at least a product to promote, right? I am going to tell you what I usually do:

    1. I collect around 1.000 keywords using keyword research software focusing on long tail keywords (as Red Paul said) as those keywords usually low in cost and high CTR.

    2. log in to my adwords account, if you don't have one then you can sign-up here. I will not explain how to register an account with adwords, you can simply follow the instruction.

    3. create a new keyword-targeted campaign, and follow the instruction such as naming your campaign etc (it's pretty easy really)

    4. write appealing headlines (contains main keywords is preferable), write the biggest benefit of your product on the first line and the biggest features on the second. That is not an absolute rule but it works wonder for me.

As Red Paul said (again :D) "Just set you daily max spend and cpc very low while you're experimenting." I would normally go for daily budget: $5,-/day and
CPC: $0.2/click. Don't worry if you see warning message stating that so many keywords are inactive as it won't make your ads disqualified or won't be showed.

For more details I would suggest you to follow kidiezone.com's suggestion, read the material provided by google itself first, as I am sure you'll get better ideas on starting adwords campaign.

google charge you per click not only based on position, but also based on the QS of your landing page. without knowing inside out, its a suicide mission to jump into adwords. do a search on adwords quality score, landing page, and find all the tutorials out there. make yourself 100% familiar. remember, people who are already advertising, you need to compete with them for postiion. and there are some BIG sharks out there. so study a lot before you start. specially on quality score and landing page optimization

Many times, quality score can be low and it might even say that your ad is not showing, but this status changes frequently. You might see you had clicks and impressions when everything else indicated you had a poor position. AdWords is not always up-to-date with these indicators, but spending is still displayed fairly close to real time.
It is not a suicide mission like the previous poster said. Even with minimal knowledge, you still set spending limits. Google's keyword tool is useful. Depending on what area you working in, CPC can be extremely high. The best thing about AdWords is the ability to see your spending in real time. If you can track your sales in real time, you can be successful with Adwords. If you are not making any sales, look at the basics. Make sure the keyword is relevant to the ad. If people feel deceived, no matter how expensive the keyword might be, you will not convert the sale. Most success is based on common sense and understanding your target market.
