I can help you here. I'm not trying to 'sell' anything but I was the number 2 Hyundai sales person in the country from 2000 to 2004. The number 1 guy sat 3 desks away from me and is still one of my best friends.

To answer your question, you don't need any money to get started. You want to look for two things - tons of floor traffic and no 'up system'. If they have an 'up system' you will rotating through the floor traffic. You want a place where you can go out and grab as many customers as you can get.

You also should think about selling used. The commissions are very light on new cars and you have to do much more volume. I was make about $250 per car but I was doing around 40 per month. With used you can do 7 or 8 per month and make around 1200 per car if they buy them right and you dont sell ad cars.

I can help you out alot. If you want, shoot me a PM and I'll give you a complete run down on what to expect and how the business works.

$250 a car? New? Those are more around a few thousand a car, used are a lot lower then new.

Straight from my neighbor who owns his own lot and knows exactly what he pays employees.

I think Kenny is on about commission sales..hes not on about buying cars then selling them on, if you buy like 10 brand new fiat puntos, buy a lot of land, set up abit of and office or whatever..you buy the puntos at 6,000 each and you can sell em at 7995-9995 each depending on your lots location..i used to sell used cars, i bought them from a garage that sold wrecks cars for like £100 then i repaired the body on them so they were drivable and looked jsut like a normal clean used car..and sold it on for 500-3000 my nxt door neighbor bought a smashed in lambo for 9000 and then sold it on for 60,000 once hed sorted it out.

A lot of it depends on how big you get and what country and state you are in.

Here in the U.S. if you are large and legit you need licensing and to be boned and insured etc. $$$

Also most sales in the U.S. are on credit so you have to be able to accept credit.

If you are small time you can buy and sell under the radar in want ads and craigslist but their not a lot of money in that..

If you want to start selling cars you have to start somewhere. It really depends on how much capital is available to you currently. You could start by selling used cars and then work your way up to high end new cars, but it all amounts to what start capital is available to you from the beginning. By the way, the car business is really tough right now because of the economy and very competitive, cheers!

You can start a ONLINE Car Buying/selling system. You need only as Website, fully advertised. set a commission level and match buyers and sellers.

The thing about selling cars is you have to get the car cheaper then others so you can make a profit.

Small dealers do this by going to actions and buy repo and seizure cars or by getting “mechanic specials” cars that are broke down and need some work to run.
But they are both risky and you have to know cars well at the actions you don’t get to test drive the cars so it is a gamble you might buy one get it home and the engine blows up. And to get mechanic specials you have to know why they don’t run people will tell you it just need $20 but in reality it needs $2000. Then you have to be a mechanic to fix it for cheap.

Ligit dealers make money from high and low book prices when someone trades in a car the trade it in at low book the dealer cleans it up and sells it at high book and keeps the profit.

To be a small time used car dealer with 10-15 low end used cars in the U.S. you will probably need about $30,000-$50,000 to get it rolling.

To start hitting the actions and scavenging mechanic specials you will probably need about $3000. and knowledge and tools to fix cars to get started.

First you need know what cars do you want to sell. Used long time, used just few years, used just a yeras, almost news. Then you should to know more about average price in your country of exactly car. Then try to find where can you get it cheaper. Maybe you need to get to other place, city, country or even continent.

Ever thought about importing your own cars and selling them? Or importing in general? Or import broker?

I'm not sure what the US market is like, but it is viable in Australia.

Of course, given you target the right clients / cars etc.
