Mybb is free, but Vbullition cost 150 bucks, to get them all you have to do is download the sofware.

I've used both phpbb and vbulletin on my sites. I personally like the versatility of vbulletin alot more but it costs money to get it.

If you have fantastico with your hosting you can install PHPBB2 with your hosting instantly for free. It's a pretty good forum for being free. If you have some money to spend though, I'd go vb. Good luck with your site though!

I just installed PHPbb on my forum at famosomagazine.com/forum and so far I really like it even tho it is harder to install hacks and modifications then vbulletin but you can do a lot more since it is open source.

there are many forum scripts out there. the best is Vbulletin(even this site(DP) uses it) but it's going to cost you some money. there are also some fee ones like PHPBB and SMF. PHPBB is more known but i think SMF is a better one and more easier to use!

I agree with Nitro on this one. However a guestbook does offer limited functionality. What you need to do is consider the usage of the script you want to use.

Will people be allowed to create and participate in conversations (forum), respond to articles you wrote (blog/news article management system with commenting enabled), or just write random comments (shoutbox).

Think about the purpose of the functionality you wish to enable, then go from there.

And please, for the love of GOD, don't even THINK about touching phpBB2. It's got more (security) holes than the products made by a Swiss cheese processing plant.
