I know this is a dumb thread title, but I'm hoping it's dumb enough to get people to actually read it and help me! For the past 6 years, I've had a cell phone on a regular plan through my company. I just moved companies and no longer have a cell. I don't need to use it much, and therefore don't want to pay $40/month. What would you recommend? I'm in Canada by the way.
Get a "pay as you go" cell phone. Pay $40 to buy X amount of minutes, and they carry over month to month until you use them. Therefor avoiding the monthly fee It only gets expensive if you start using it a lot. Most people these days are turning off their land lines and using just cell phones.
You can get a prepaid cellphone at most local retailers. You will receive a local number. The most common prepaid providers are T-Mobile, Virgin Mobile, Cingular GoPhone and Tracfone. Also: You may be able to order online if you find a prepaid provider that you like. http://www.t-mobile.com/shop/plans/default.aspx?plancategory=4 http://www.tracfone.com http://www.cingular.com/cell-phone-service/go-phones/?_requestid=252130 http://www.virgin.com/gateways/mobile/
I'm from Canada and I have Telus 'pay and talk' account, and pay $10+tax=$11.40 per month, if this good for you, you can go for it. I stydied the market and did not find anything cheaper.
Pay as you go is the best bet for really low usage and emergencies... I have found that Cingular has a decent network also.
don't you have cell phones in Canada yet? ha, well here when people say "phone" they usually mean cellphone
A friend of mine got his cell phone at Wallmart... via a Kellogg's box promotion with a free phone with prepaid plan.
if you'd read the thread you'd see that the reason I posted this is because I don't get a promotion through my work
