Ok, so I'll give a rundown of my home setup. We have a Cable Modem/Router and 3 computers connected to it. The other computers work just fine and mine did as well until yesterday out of nowhere it just wouldn't connect. When I try to resolve it through the windows troubleshooting program it'll say. "Local Area Connection" Doesn't Have A Valid IP Configuration I talked to Time Warner Cable (Even though they're useless) and they said "It sounds like a problem with Windows IP configuration" and told me they can't help me. Here is what I have tried so far: I've reset the modem, I've restarted the modem, I've restarted the computer, I've uninstalled the network adapter and re-installed several times, I have tried the /release and /renew in the command prompt, I've looked for the Bonjour services which some tech forums recommended... I don't know what else to try. Any solutions? $100 to whoever can fix this god awful curse of a problem.
My suggestion is to contact a local college student. I take all my computer enigmas to them; they are awesome. I apologize I can't help you, but I hope the suggestion is helpful.
What IP address is this PC pulling from the router? If its 169.254.xxx.xxx, it's self-assigned by Windows and will not work. Are the other computers still working? If they are then that means the other computers are pulling an IP from the DHCP server on the router, and that internet is present on the router. That would isolate the 3rd PC was having the issue. If this is the case, try this: Save the changes and see if the PC pulls an IP address now. If it does, it's one of 3 things going wrong, the NIC port on PC, NIC port on router, or the ethernet cable. Through process of elimination you should be able to find the root cause. Yes -- I am a level 2 tech at a country wide ISP, and do this multiple times on a daily basis...
ActiveFrost: DHCP client is running in services. elicitservers: It appears changing it to 10mbit had no effect. I've restored the computer to factory default twice now thinking it would fix it. Also: I am not sure if this helps at all or not but if I plug a Wireless Adapter in.. I can connect just fine (I'm using my landlord's right now though and she's probably going to want it back so this is not a working solution)
Try opening a command prompt and issuing these 2 commands: If the wifi is working then it could likely be an issue with your NIC card/drivers. When you mean you've restored the computer to factory default, did you mean using the recovery process to effectively bring the computer to a state it was in when you first got it? If so, and that didn't work, likely you've got a bad NIC card, do you have any others you can swap out (or just add as it is likely an on-board NIC) to test it? If the wifi is working and you are able to allocate an IP and browse, then the TCP/IP stack and Windows itself should be fine, and tends to make me believe it is a hardware issue.
Which still doesn't make any since, why would it just stop working out of nowhere? We've had internet here for four years, and just two days ago out of nowhere it just stopped working. I restored it to factory default.. programs.. data.. gone reinstalled Windows. I've heard of people putting in a NIC card then removing it and trying the default and it working again but I don't have any old NIC cards laying around. I also feel I should mention this.. here is our setup. We have a Time Warner issued netgear router, and it's connected to a Rangemax Duo Wireless Max Range router. When I had this problem before.. we had a Motorola Surfboard Modem.. I could just reset the hardware on the modem and it worked just fine after that.. However, the garbage Time Warner hands out, doesn't have any options to edit the firewall or to reset it to factory default. So I might just be screwed until we get a Surfboard Modem... or there must be a solution I'm not thinking of.
Its very difficult to fix issue by replying threads.. Send me chat request through GTalk I have sent you a PM
I'm on Gtalk now, I replied to your PM. Also, it's been 2 days now.. I have rebooted the PC yet again and I tried finding different drivers for this thing but I can't find any. Nvidia Nforce Networking Controller.
I believe I had answered a similar query long back, but I can't recollect it that which thread it was. Just try to reset your router and then reconfigure it. BTW, why would you pay $100 when you can get a local technician?
