How do I find the keywords to target in my SEO

I am starting an e-commerce store selling sporting goods, tshirts, hats, MLB, NFL, NBA licensed merchandise, etc. There is a lot of competition out there when it comes to online stores selling sporting goods, so what keywords should I target?

As a customer when I think about what I would search for I think of the specific items. I don't think I would go and search for : "sports merchandise", I would search a specific item like "new York yankees jersey". So do I even try to build the links for the home page targeting niche keywords or just try to build the SEO for all the specific items I sell?

In my Opinion targeting specific keywords is better. Try to find out long tail keywords with low competition that are more specific to the product you are selling and build backlinks for each specific keywords..:)

You need to do a thorough market research to find out what users with buyer intention type in the search boxes. You can then move on to building your keyword list. You would want to get low competition, long tail keywords that target your products.

I also suggest to use Google Keyword Tool coz it's the most reliable.

Try to use long tail keywords with good traffic coz most likely it has low competition.

You can also use Traffic Travis, a great keyword research tool. It can also analyze your pages for you and let you know how you can further improve your on-page SEO.

what i think is a lot of newbies entering in this online business platform mostly miss a lot of basic things. They got information overload and misguided. First of all before you do anything it will be wise to acqure some little knowledge about it. Since this is going to be a business I would advice you to take your time and do more research and educate yourself little more so you can get a good picture of what online marketing is all about. Please take this guidelines E.U.I which means Educating, Understanding and Implementing. I want you to succeed.
