How do I cover my a**?

    Okay just thought a catchy title might get more page views. Although I am sure you are all used to that trick...

    Anyway on with the problem. I need help. I have developed a site for tattoo artists to submit designs and sell them. I of course take a little percentage out of each sale for the site building and traffic and the tattoo artists get paid for designs they had in their studio anyway. Win win right? Well that is the hope.

    I found a cool script that is essentail a copy of templatemonster.com 's website which allows for designers to submit and sell approved templates. Well the script was set up to sell templates. With some tweaking and redesigning I was able to pretty much get my site 99% ready to go. However, one of th artists pointed out that the images weren't very well protected and could just be printed off and that no one would pay when they could steal.

    Realizing the basic human nature and a preferance to steal over pay I quickly added a disable right click script to all the pages. This works well and now people can;t right cilck and steal they have to at least work a little harder. However as I was looking at a sample image yesterday in internet Explorer to my horrow that dumb little graphic icon bar that has an icon for save, print, email, open folder came up. Well, this defeats the whole purpose of the disable right click if there is a bar that pops up and allows you to copy.

    You can see what I am talking about by going to the following address while in internet explorer:
    http://www.buytattoodesigns.com/fullview.php?tempid=7

    I wish I could just do away with internet explorer and push everyone to use mozilla or something but that is a losing battle I suppose......

    So I turn to the wemaster, web designer, and web freaks or geeks (depending on how you look at things) and throw my self at their feet. Please what can I do to disable that icon? There must be a way please help!

    So if you know how to get rid of that little pest in my life I would be eternally grateful.

    Thanks in advance all....

    Hey I will even throw in a free design of you choice if you want? Or I can give you a commision refund on a custom tattoo design from my other site.

    Disabling right clicks is the worst thing you can do. Why not just disable right clicks on images only?

    You CANNOT prevent it in that way.
    1. The jpgs are all in the temp internet files of the visitors anyway
    2. if you click the top toolbar in all versions of internet explorer you can choose 'view source, you can look at the code and go the address of the images
    3. you can take a screen shot and capture the images.
    4. you can take a photograph of the screen.
    5. you can trace it with a pencil and paper
    6. you can trace it with a tabet pc/pocket pc or graphics tablet

    So there is NOWAY to stop it I am aware of. Mozillla makes NO difference. I dont believe there is a way around it

    Here are a few options:

    1. Change your business model - offer FREE designs and 'premium packaged ones that are only available by cd, secured download areas etc. - EXPECT them to turn up on ebay (maybe repackaged)
    2. Distort the images in someway that they are not really usable. - detracting from the visitor experience and conversion rate.
    3. Expand to offer advertising to tattooists, removal treatments, peircing etc. move away from the designs element being the core of your business

    Ha and I actually want to get a new tattoo at the moment. ;) although I havent even managed to get close to deciding.

    Flash could make things a bit more difficult for the average user actually

    Just so you know, you can also:
    - File->Save Page
    - View->Source (find images, go to them directly, save them)
    - Go to your cache.
    - Print screen and crop (obvious one that anyone knows how to do)

    Disabling right click doesn't help you at all. It just annoys people (ie. when I middle click to scroll, it pops up).

    Best thing you can do is add a watermark, or only offer partial views.

    Hi all-

    wow thanks for the quick feedback...

    That is pretty much as I thought and I was pretty annoyed also by the right click deal. I had thought about the cd also but I wanted to be able to sell per design.

    I will go with the watermark/distrort method I think that is best. The artists I am working with are really pushing the whole issue and there is not much that can be done about it.

    Thanks

    This is the ONLY, repeat ONLY way to protect images on the net. Period. When the cutomer pays, they get the clean image.

    Still easy to work around (much better if you are using photos) but simple/ blocky designs will still be very usable.

    As far as your original question goes.

    GALLERYIMG="0" removes the icons for printing/emailing.
    For example;

    <img border="0" src="image.jpg" GALLERYIMG="no" >

    As for protecting your images you will have to come up with something a LOT better or they will all appear on CD's for $5 on ebay and you will have a lot of unhappy artists.

    Partial viewing or thumbnails is the safer way.

    Disabling right click and the gallery image is no way to offer images for sale when the user can still highlight and CTRL+C, you will have to come up with something flash/applet maybe I guess that distorts the image enough ie ripples/waves moving down the image continuously type applet?

    I am not sure if you found a solution yet, but isn't it an option to use phpGD to make a protective over layer, I have only heard about this and not used it myself so you will have to do some google'ing
