How do I convert my visitors to members

I recently launch my website and I'm not to sure why visitors isn't converting to users. I get roughly 100 visitors per day?

My site is a membership directory site. It's for different companies to building their products and job offering profiles. And for individual who want to build their personal resume. I do charge a publishing fee and featuring fee. Any inputs would help. Thanks!

Probably because you charge and people aren't confident you'll get the traffic to give them a "return on investment".
You're really just another directory and there are millions of those.

What offline marketing are you doing to build that 100 visitors up to something meaningful?
    How recognisable is your brand?

You show up being in the USA - if so are you targeting a geographic or industry niche? How much direct and indirect competition is there? I'm not in the USA but there were a few sites like yours setup in NZ a long time ago and I don't think they really got off the ground. Tradies were keen but customers took their referrals from people they knew, not websites. Things might be different now but I suspect they'd look to social networks like facebook to ask their broader group of friends before a website they barely know.

I think it is too early to charge any fee. If you really need to make money, go for Adsense or something of similar kind. But do not charge fee, it only drives potential customers away because there are tons of websites exactly like yours that are free and popular.

Converting visitors depends on a variety of factors, without seeing your website as well. It's hard to say exactly. You'll have to go technical a bit.

@sarahk, as of now, I want to focus within the nation first. I want to have a good experience before I reach out worldwide. Hmm.. maybe you do have a point, but I still feel like there are still small businesses who doesn't use linkedin or any other social media for it. I'll definitely think about advice! Thanks

@Chad Eztraffic, Hm, maybe my approach is wrong. I was thinking that if I charge a fee, it'll give people an impression that the listings are from real people instead of fake profiles. Well, revenue isn't important at the moment. I just want to focus on building the directory with listings. my website is www(dot)clessified(dot)com

@Chanh I think there are elements that work against you, and some that does not contribute anything to the page.

It gives me an impression that no one works with your website.

They come here to see the listings, not to read your blog and news.

    -----
    My suggestion:

The search bar needs to be above the fold (visitors see right away upon arrival). Stick to what search engines do.

I think the simple answer might be that you're not getting the right sort of traffic.

How are you acquiring those visitors? Are you targeting them well, or have you just been trying for maximum visitor numbers?

Obviously, you could post a misleading PPC ad to your site and get visitors, but you wouldn't get many conversions. So, what are you doing to ensure that those visitors who are coming to your site are genuinely interested in what you're offering?

Also, it's worth checking in your tracking reports to see how long the average visitor stays on the site. If they're leaving within 10 seconds then it means that they had no interest in your site anyway and are bad traffic. If they're staying long enough to have read the details on your site, then it's something about your membership terms that are probably putting them off (the downside to this is that some site trackers don't give accurate visit lengths if the visitor never clicks beyond the entry page).

    Regards

    Jason

There are lots of reasons that could be hindering you from converting visitors into users. It could be anything. I suggest you research about Conversion Rate Optimization, and maybe find a thing or two on how you can turn visits into sign-ups. :)

I wouldn't throw in a popup the moment someone visits your classifieds. The popup, by the way, has a weird padding on the right in Chrome:

    ScreenHunter_125 Dec. 01 09.56.jpg

That popup alone will turn off about 20% of your visitors. Secondly, allow visitors to post ads without signing up for an account. Your classifieds is brand new, they need to test the waters, so to say, before they will be ready to sign up. Thirdly, charging for the posts should be optional (for instance, a charge for keeping an ad longer, or a charge if a user wants to feature an ad, etc.). And lastly, you need to make your design a bit more user-friendly. Currently, there is way to much going on on your index page, that shouldn't even be there.

@Chad Eztraffic Thanks for the advice, I'll definitely get onto that right now! I'll get rid of the blog at the bottom and probably add it to my footer menu.

@Jason Webb I use GAnalytics and find out that average session time is 4:00 which means.. something about my content is throwing them off. I'm looking over my content right now.

@ninamarie Thanks! I was thinking of that method too but wasn't sure whats it called. lol :)

@qwikad.com yea, I got rid of the popup. I'll put it back on once I get more traffic. Yea, that padding.... I have no clue why it's there. it wasn't there before...you're right, I'll look into the charging method again.

Thanks everyone for your inputs! ^_^

100 visitors a day isn't much. Even for targeted traffic.

maybe visitors aren't yet convinced about your product/service. when I read the title I thought it was a blog with articles on it, but yours is a website where ou offer services
try offering few reviews (people loves reviews) add more testimonials about your product and make more informations about it so visitors know exactly what is about

@ceenote100 its not! but I like to be positive. haha better than nothing right?

@000karim I'm not sure how to start on the reviews and testimonials part. My site is fairly new, I'm not too sure if anyone would give it a + review.

I've handled different directory sites before and seriously I really find it hard to manage.
You must need something that will differentiate your site from the other directory sites.
There are actually a lot now and it is kinda competitive so you need to stand out.
BTW, do you offer promotions? It is a great way to invite people to join.

Simply post a thread here or any other forums related to IM where you offer your services, then you can offer some reviews but make sure you offer them to people wiling to give feedbacks about them
also you can simply go to fiverr and look for some gig related to reviews, althought I don't advice it
