I have a fairly large Excel file that I use a ton and want to make it available to some of my customers on the web. I've tried the 'save as web page' thing. But apparently, from what I can gather, that requires: 1) Internet Explorer (thus limiting my audience), and 2) MS Office Components on the server. ...and when I did save it that way it blew up to 20MB. (The original file is 5MB.) The spreadsheet has evolved over a long time and has some fairly complex functions. Tons of formulas and lookups, etc. And I have a buddy who updates it from time to time with tweaks...so it's not something that I want to recreate or recode in any web language. I'd love some kind of tool that you push a button and out comes a few pages that you upload and that's it. I'm sure I can't be the first person to want to do this. I searched google and came up with a whole bunch of useless suggestions. So now I'm turning to the experts! EDIT: I would want users to be able to enter values in certain cells and have other cells reflect the new calculations. Any suggestions?
Do u want your users to be able to search the db or just be able to view the whole thing in its entirety?
Doh. Sorry. Meant to mention that I need them to be able to interact. Ie: change the values on one tab, have the calculations reflect the change on another....
This is no small project. Most people would tell you to use php, i myself am a fan of ColdFusion. But regardless you will need someone with programming experience and upload it to a server with that platform installed. If you just need to display info from the db then its not that big of a deal; kinda becomes a little complicated if you want to manipulate date (depends on the complexity of your db). I hope i got your question right. If you wanna give me some details about the db i might be able to help you out a bit more
Barginator is correct, it can be done using several languages but it won't be a drag and drop solution and there would be no way to change the excel formatting after getting it done and having it reflect those same changes on the website.
Bummer. It's not so much a database lookup as it is the complex calculations that need to be done that concern me. For example, users would select several options from a bunch of dropdowns, possibly input a few numbers in some other cells, then look at the calculated results. It's not that I'm lazy. Well...ok, partly. But it's that I'd need to update the file every few weeks, so that's why I was hoping there was a 'push-button' type solution.
Both. Sheets of lookup values, as well as several places where users would input their own data, and would need to see the results of the calculations.
You didnt really answer my question. Can users manipulate as in permanently change values on the spreadsheet? Regardless, there is no turnkey solution for you problem; hire someone to do the work for you..bet you can find some1 for 50 bucks, post it in the buy, sell or trade section or head over to getafreelancer
