What program are you using to edit photos? In Photoshop and Fireworks, I use the "magic wand" tool.

    This is what I do:

~ Open your picture in Fireworks

~ Click on the Magic Wand tool.

~ Set the "Tolerance" to about 20, set the "Edge" to "feather" and "1"

~ Click on the background that you want to remove

~ Go to the Edit menu and select "Cut"

The more contrasting the background is, the easier it is to remove, so keep that in mind when you are taking the pictures. You'll have to mess around with the magic wand setting to find what works best for you. :)

Another way - which is simillar to the above post is to use the marquee tool and to painstakingly draw around ure designed image. Then right click your selection, click select inverse marquee, then click feather - set feather to 1 and then cut the image.

The easiest way to do it is probably using masking, as you'll have full control over what you're doing, and can tweak the opacity etc...

Masking will get you the best results, also try using the color select tool

I use a pretty quick and easy method to cut out backgrounds intended to paste into white backgrounds, good for web graphics. definately not good enough for print.

    - use the free select tool, draw an basic outline around the image about 5 pixels away.

    - edit>feather
    - set the feather ammount to something proportionate to the resolution of the image. For example for a 1000x1000 image I would use a feather up to 20.

    - edit>inverse selection
    - Image adjustments > Levels
    - move the levels untill the background has dissappeared
    - (you can also try using hue/saturation for the above step)

    - deselect the selection, then use the level s again to even out levels on the main image.

This will give u a very smooth/softened look around the edges. If you are after sharp edges, take the masking path.

I use photoshop. You can either use the Extract filter or the eraser tool. Look at this tutorial:

You can also use the magnetic lasso tool but as was mention before, the magic wand tool is the easiest option.

    Good luck!

There is a relatively new plug-in that's now out for PhotoShop, called 'Background Remover' (original name eh?). I tried it out and it works MUCH better than the magic wand, lasso, mask, etc. It's now a permanent addition to my plugin toolbox.

Correctus....I'm glad you reminded me. It works...ONLY on PS 7.0.

It will not work on earlier versions.

It seems like a great plugin, wonder if you can tell me where to find it? Because I am making some sites that will have lots of pictures soon and I'll have to go for heavy editing with images for the same.

    Dear Tauren,

Try using magic wand tool or marquee tool to get your work done. You can even try masking to remove the back ground pictures. Hope masking yields better result.
