How do I achieve this?

I'm a artist. I'd like to come up in all the searches for photographers in the new york area, ie --long island, staten island etc, but not necessarily new york city itself as that would be too expensive. I thought if I just set the keyword price low (1.00), that would work, but I don't seem to be coming up in any of the outlying area searches at all. thanks!

You need to set your geo-targeting properly. I don't know New York at all, but I can see that after you've chosen New York, you've got these - and more options -
    New York NY (Metro)
    Accord, NY (Town/City)
    Adelphia, NJ (Town/City)
    Albertson, NY (Town/City)
    Allamuchy, NJ (Town/City)
    Allendale, NJ (Town/City)
    Allenhurst, NJ (Town/City)
    Allentown, NJ (Town/City)
    Allenwood, NJ (Town/City)
    Alpine, NJ (Town/City)
    Amagansett, NY (Town/City)
    Amawalk, NY (Town/City)
    Amenia, NY (Town/City)
    Amityville, NY (Town/City)
    Andover, NJ (Town/City)

    etc etc etc

If you've set it up for the areas you want to show in, and you're not getting impressions, then you're probably not paying enough.

    Magda,
Actually it's Los Angeles to be honest, and it just says Los Angeles. Now there is also Pasadena, Van Nuys, Woodland Hills, Culver City. and 100 others sub cities. I figure if I bid $1.00 I would miss Los Angeles, but come up in all the obscure sub cities. But no. why not?

I don't get why you think that would work. You want to geo-target - use the geo-targeting features.
Why are you guessing that a $1 bid is enough to show in Pasadena but not in Los Angeles?
Pay enough for your ad to show where you want it to, and don't target the areas you don't want it to show in.

    I agree with Magda,

You can't assume anything. You will lose your shorts. You want in the gane you have to pay for it. Geo target is crucial in your case. Pick a few cities or smaller towns and test it. Don't just bid a buck and think it will get you where you want to go. You might want to find a cheap adwords course and read it.

thanks Guys, great info. Ok, I just bumped it back to $2.50.
Just annoys me in that when I started a couple weeks about I got a lot of clicks, but very few calls, and Adwords scares me in that it could be a big sinkhole.
I've always been real wary of Adwords becuase I do very well with Organic, yet my logs say I get thousands of clicks via Google organic, most of who never call or book. Thousands....
It's free so I'm not concerned (organic) -- and it does bring great business sporadically -- again free.
Yet I have friends to do well with Adwords, and I've never figured out how they succeed with it as it can get so expensive.
Back to location: if you are set up for Los Angeles, shouldn't you come up for all the several subcities in the area automatically?
