How do ecommerce sites generate or encourage incoming links?

If you have a website that mainly sells products, how do you generate incoming links? I suppose you need to write fresh unique content in a separate section of your website hoping that others will find it useful enough to link to those pages and then link to your product pages from these pages?

Do you write articles about topics related to your products and submit them to article directories?

Do press releases ever generate good incoming links?

    What are some other ideas?

Have you got an affiliate program in place? This can be a great way to get links to your websites as affiliate marketers will promote your pages from their websites.

What about find blogs and forums that relate to the products you are selling and post them with links back to your sites?

Have you considered online classified ad sites such as usfreeads.com, and craigslist.org. These sites can get you links, although they do expire after a while (but you are free to re-insert them again). They are indexed very quickly by the search engines.

Consider looking at ebays classified ad's as well.

Finally, what about a press release for your site? If you spend a little extra you can get one way links from large numbers of websites and these links don't expire. prweb.com is one site but their are many more.

    Cheers

i do work for an e-commerce site and the best way i have found is to find forums related to products and help people out who are looking for a product that you sell then link to that page you can spread your links around a few dozen forums this way. Also submitting to directories, or have vendors list you as a place to buy, hope this helps some, don't forget your anchor text!!!

Affiliate programs don't help with linking as the links are not direct, they're normally redirect links in order to track the visitors.

Sales, great prices. People love to find deals and will blog and post about it to others. Freebies usually help too. Give people a reason to link to your site on their own :)
