    besides make money from paid links,
    a part of free directories also place adsense on the web page.

    You can make money from charging for any of your listing options, you can offer sponsored links, banner space, run other affiliate ads, run adsense or an alternative to adsense.

    You can offer sponsored categories you could provide ad space in your emails sent to submitters.

    Theres probably other ways but i cant think of anymore. :)

    Asense
    I believe each case is looked at but there are many Dirs with this.

    Regarding pay for links theres various thoughts and beliefs and approaches to it.

    I dont know of any objection from google yet to placing adsense on directories.
