A.G is right, much of the fake traffic is generated by a 1x1 pixel iframe. Sometimes they will pop-up your site as well. While the traffic may be a real person, it is obviously not a valid visit or click-through.

Traffic trackers, logs, footprint tracking - the tools are there for you.

@globalprompt - You can detect most invalid clicks, either during the click, or through post-click analysis.

With fake traffic, a few tips to detect in Google Analytics:

    1. Pageviews (For multipage sites, if 1, likely fake.)
    2. Time on Site (If 00:00:01 or less, likely fake.)
    3. City (If all the same city, likely fake.)
    4. Screen Resolution (If all the same screen resolution, likely fake.)
    5. Site Overlay (If similar click % on every link, likely fake. If click pattern abnormal, likely fake.)

The stuff that is particularly challenging to catch is the fake toolbar traffic, which runs as a "fun" toolbar on tens of thousands of machines around the world, when its real purpose is to generate fake traffic. Such passes the first four tests, but #5 is usually the way to catch it.

Just seen this thread, and although and old post is still a big issue - yes you can use a product to detect fake traffic - TrafficCake for example carries out hundreds of tests to determine whether the traffic is fake. If it is it flags it within your account and gives you evidence to take to your traffic seller and demand your money back.

I read all the comments, I made a traffic bot which can't be detected due to IP address, referers, user agents, no. of clicks in website, staying on page time..everything is random and can be configured by user according to his use..can't say anything about cookie thing of detecting fake traffic..
