In most cases affiliate programs pay per sale or per lead. For example, PPC is for the amount of traffic.

If you are asking about cj (this forum after all), most merchants pay per completed sale and some pay per lead, but a lead usually means not just a click but a user who completes a form or requests a free service from the merchant.

you usually choose merchants that sell products that could be attractive to your visitors and put banners or links in your website. If you don't have a website you might either put up a website to promote certain merchant's products or set up an Adwords campaign and send click to the merchant's page. When the visitors make purchases through those clicks, you get the comission.

well, yours is a broad question, more specific doubts?

That depends strogly on the kind of website you have, or the sort of product or service you are promoting. for example, hosting providers often offer leads (say $1 per contact) and sales (say $30 per account open). If your site is visited by webmasters or other people interested in having a website you may get leads and sales, probably more leads and fewer sales. the profit will depend on how interested is your audience in getting hosting (leads) and how attractive the hosting plans are (sales).

on the other side, if your site is about products (not services) you probably wont find merchants paying for leads, so all it about selling stuff.

Pay-per-Click systems are liable to fraud. Pay-per-Performance turn to be more reliable in the end. For further comments write me in PM.
