I don't understand how adsense stats work, can someone please help me here. For the month of April
according to adsense my site got 1,200 (1.2K) page impressions for an adsense link unit which appears
on every page of my site. Now if I look at my awstats I see for the month of April I actually got just
over 4,000 (4K) unique visitors. How does that work?

Everyone of these stats packages has their own definition of a visitor. Suppose the same IP comes by, after 15 minutes, some stats call this a new "visit", while others simply count unique IP(which is also flawed). So you end up with different numbers.

Google's AdSense stats match those of Google Analytics. Their adsense ads are an urchin too, it sends back as much info as Analytics does, so if you install that on your site you'll have a more precise idea of what Google thinks is a visitor. They also monitor you through adsense, analytics, gmail, etc so they basically know WHO you are, instead of just knowing you're a visitor.
