How difficult is it to get ranked and how long does it typically take for a fairly competitive keyword?

Also what was most effective for you and what rank do you have to get to generally start drawing daily traffic?

It depends on how competitive the keyword is. It could take a week or even a year.

Link building is the most effective way.

The more competitive it is, the longer it can take to rank well, the best method to rank well for a keyword is to use the keyword in your anchor text when you build links

It is not that hard but it just takes time. Don't even try some cheating methods cause will not last long, strive for safe and right way promoting your site.

For competitive keywords probably 1 to 2 years minimum.

If you want to compete buy an already existing site or a very old domain (90s era).

2 months at least and 6 months at most and that is if you only do a non-stop promotion, SEO and marketing of your website plus you have a very good link structure as well as other important onpage factors like optimized content, title tag and description and the anchor texts that you use in your home page are from a keyword research based data. :)

master 06 is right. Follow his advice. But don't be discouraged, sometimes these things can happen within days.

Two things are important to rank good in search results, content and backlinks. Concentrate on these two things, and your site's rank will improve.

These are some of the factors which have some effects on rankings.

    1. Age of the Domain
    2. On page text content
    3. Keyword density
    4. Navigation Structure
    5. Competitiveness of the keyword
    6. Link Building (through various means)

Considering the above factors you can estimate to get your keywords get ranked within a range of 2-6 months. As already agreed above by many people.

There are a lot of things that go into ranking well but mostly it's all about backlinks and content.

For less competitive keywords you can rank highly very quickly. For very competitive keywords it could take years and you still might not ever get to page one of the SERPs.

i am agreed with Trent Brownrigg. to get higher rank in google's books, you need very solid and valued back links to your site with positive and distinct contents to get highly ranked by google.
