How did you learn search engine optimization?

Many people learn by spending countless hours working on websites, while others go to SEO workshops, classes and/or read books/ebooks.

What approach did you use and what do you feel is the best way for beginners to learn search engine optimization – SEO?

    Thanks

I learned from forums like this one, seek and ye shall find... or pay some money for an SEO book.

I'm still learning, but forums are the best way to go, they are free and have a ton of information.

well I learn it from forum, blog I visit, e-books, and the Busby SEO Test, I never pay for some SEO book, because I think if I combine everything that I found on internet, and filter everything the result will be the same.

I ran a blog in a pretty competitive field a couple years back and wanted to get more exposure - appearing higher in the SERPs seemed like a no-brainer, so I started looking into SEO.

My advice for an absolute beginner is to find reputable, updated blogs or publications. Narrow it down to a short-list of five publications which cover a range of SEO-related topics, and then read all of them religiously. One of the fantastic things about SEO is that practices are always in a constant state of flux, so you have to remain current on every new development. It keeps it interesting, and there are always new things to learn.

Beyond that, practice. Learn how to understand analytics data so that you can measure your successes (and failures - everyone has 'em) and learn what works and what doesn't. Set up a personal site about something you're interested in and see what you can do with it in terms of SEO.

You can attend all the conferences you want, read every single frontpage Sphinn article, but none of that matches trying out your own theories and going from there.

    Reading, reading, reading.

I learned a lot from posts of this forum, talked to some people who showed me the basics and that's it.

I would suggest you learn all you can on here and then start doing it for yourself - that is when you can start to tap into the knowledge of others

Read and listen. Then try it for yourself.

You have to sift through the rumor, half truths, and what actually works.
