Hello, Obviously everyone who is on this site or reading this is here because they are in some way interested in Design or Development, SEO etc... I am curious just how everyone got involved in this industry and how you got to where you are today. I am very interested in SEO and web development and am facing a bit of a dilema at the moment as to wether I should go to university and study ICT (web development) for the next 4 years or if I should just go with what I know and learn more myself whilst trying to make money in the industry without the qualifications. It would be nice to hear from anyone here who has a design firm and just see how highly they rate qualifications in the industry. Also if anyone else here went to Uni and what did you study that eventually lead you here? Thanks, look forward to replys
Personally, I think you should START NOW. Start a business, and learn as you go. I'm a big fan of learning what you need to know, when you need to know it. I dropped out of high school in the early 90s, and immediately started learning things that nobody had ever thought to teach me. I managed to weasel my way into managing a few websites for various universities in the late 90s, and was continually shocked at how little The Academics knew about anything/everything to do with the real world. SEO and "web development" is not something you need to hold a qualification for. I've always considered it to be similar to studying music or art - if you want to be a musician or an artist, then you should just do it. If you want to learn what everyone else already knows, then study it. Both my parents were senior university lecturers (now retired), and I know for a fact that they didn't know what the fuck they were talking about
Yup learn-as-you-go is the way most people I know do it. I am not even sure there is a qualification for SEO and related techniques....is there?
Maybe you could study graphic design or programming. However, I don't think you need to go to a university to start a company. You can learn many things here on DP as well.
Have to agree. As I have a degree, whoopeee, how do u apply it. Take a chance and do it, thats the only way to learn. And yeah the "Academics" dont keep up with the times, live and learn, or improvise, adapt and overcome.
