How did they know my traffic?

I was recently turned down for an affiliate program because, they said, my site doesn't have enough traffic. (Roughly 500 hits a day.)

How did they know how much traffic I get? I was never asked, and I don't have public stats.

Most likely they would have looked at Alexa and the number of backlinks you have using Google.

What is your website? If you go on to Google right now there is an option whereby you can see how many backlinks you have.

You might also want to try marketleap.com to see how many links you have. Based on that that is the one reason you might have been turned down.

Google says I have 1450 backlinks. But still, backlinks don't equal traffic, do they?

    consolecolors.com is my site.

    The backlinks give traffic.

The more backlinks you have the more the traffic to your website.

Is funny that some companies think that mom 'n pop traffic isn't worth the effort. That low amount of traffic could be extremely targetted and bring them many sales in the future.

    I do not agree.
You could get thousands of backlinks and still have not traffic!
And another site having 2 backlinks could generate thousands visits/day.

an affiliate program that judges on how much traffic your site generates sucks, at least that's what I think of it.

What if someone would promote the affiliate program through article writing, squidoo, myspace, youtube and blogs?

can you send the link to the affiliate program?

I agree. A small amount of traffic could be very targeted.

I recently went through this with an affiliate program. I completed their application and they then sent me a reply back that they did not believe I had enough traffic. Well, I emailed them and told them exactly how I planned to promote their program on various sites that I own. They then accepted me into their program and within 1 hour I produced 4 sales for them.

If this is a program you really feel would benefit your audience, why not try emailing them and telling them your marketing plans, etc. Maybe they will reconsider?

It can be known through several tools including Google search. Alexa can also give the figures.

Yeah, most of my hits come from search engine results, not backlinks.

Even more ridiculous is that the decision was based on CURRENT traffic. It takes a real stupid affiliate program manager to think that things like PROMOTING and ADVERTISING the site couldn't bring up the traffic...

... but even stupider is turning down affiliates AT ALL. It's free advertising, and unless you're so dumb that your affiliate commission is more than your profit margin, it's free money.

If they turned you down when you had that many backlinks and PR4, then you probably don't want to do business with them.

Generally speaking, if I get turned down by an affiliate program I just move on an find somebody who would like to make money from me. I don't hang around trying to convince them. The only time I would even consider going back to trying to convince them is if they offered something better than similiar programs (i.e. way higher commission, tools, etc).

When I had PR 4 nobody want to make business with me. After I jumped to PR 7 everybody is my "friends"
