i was checking my competitors backlinks and saw he had a link coming from an .edu site

    heres the link:

    http://www.shsu.edu/~stdcgc12/Corley_Act_11/fightingbearad.html

now, if you click ANY of the links on the page (except for the links at the bottom of course), they take you to a 404 page. its not really an educational page.

can anybody take a guess on how they got this?

The bottom links goes to sites with pr5 and pr6 they worked real hard , In my opinion edu links has no difference for google then the other Tlds.
But this is a link from a student page and it is easy to get , I also know an abondened directory on an .Edu Tld.

They can buy a link or do a link exchange, in which the search engines will regard you as gold.
Maybe the .edu site is temporarily offline, switching servers or hacked.
    Hope I've helped :)

That page was put up in 2004 using WS_FTP (http://www.shsu.edu/~stdcgc12/Corley_Act_11/WS_FTP.LOG)

Someone may have known the student (~stdcgc12) that had control of that area and was given access.

Or, maybe that user/student had a generic password for ftp and "Kara Michelle" (see WS_FTP.LOG) guessed the ftp password.

There could be other reasons also (such as those suggested by Geoffrey and more)... but I wouldn't worry about it.
