How did these sites get so large?

Do any of you know the history of sites like MySpace, FaceBook, and even this site? How did they start and how did they start advertising to end up so large?I have a lot of respect for Webmasters and especially the ones who can take it to the next level. We all know it is not an easy process.

well, its all abt investment... the more money u invest in advertising and the more features you giv, the more users u get...

social communities work like this, someone opens, sees you hav some cool members and features, they join...

Well Dacebook started at Harvard and was a way for those students to keep in touch. It then expanded to other schools in the Boston area and eventually all Universities and Colleges. From there it just exploded. Its not really about the advertising. When you have a really great and unique idea then it should just expand naturally, especially when its so social like with Facebook or MySpace.

If your trying to sell a product or service its a bit harder than these great services that are free.

It's all about creating a solid USP combined with viral attributes.

I believe in strong approach and consistency, rather than advertising. The Facebook guy had talent, and so did Google. Dating Sites, and all these profile based networks are becoming popular, because everyone wants an online page to their name. The more customization that you can offer them, the more they will remain glued to you.

You need to have the right idea at the right time and build it. It also needs to be genuinely useful to users and not available elsewhere.

The biggest thing in taking over and becoming huge is not working by yourself. I myself have been a webmaster for years though have only recently started back up a few months ago and the one thing I have used is other people. I have a website that is my main marketing project right now so what i did was contact some bloggers in my niche and asked them if there was anything I could do for them either through giving a link or other ways twitter and so on. They all had diffrent needs and wants as soon as I fullfilled them I began recieving hundreds of backlinks and traffic from them they have become very useful in growing. This becomes especially true with a forum and social sites you need peoples help, there is no way you can get there on your own.

The quote below is just the answer
“Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan "press on" has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race” - Calvin Coolidge

They were intelligent, innovative and they worked hard. They also invested some money to get where they are... You can't possibly open up huge companies like that without spending a dime.

If you create a revolutionary product it will market itself and spread quickly, look at Twitter, that is the current explosive medium of the internet. If you want to have that kind of success you will need to risk all your time, effort, and possibly capital on your ideas.
