Hello all! I'm just starting out in the devlopment of my writing work, of which i'm doing around 15 hours a week currently. How long have you been writing for? How did you get into freelance writing? What subjects do you cover? What types of writing do you cover? Hopefully that's not to many questions at once! Grant
Hi Grant, I guess most of the answers of your questions can be found in this article which I wrote: The Bloggers Guide to Freelance
Well, you actually shot too many questions. However, your approach towards development of your writing skills is little off beam. This is what I think How long have you been writing for? More you write, better you get into your skills. You will find many masterminds around who are experienced enough to know what readers actually want and what's in demand. It would be great if you READ & RESEARCH rather than asking how long others have been writing. It is very obvious that you will find beginners as well as experienced. What matters is your practice not others' experience unless you are asking or looking for some tips to hone your writing skills further. How did you get into freelance writing? Few are followed by passion, most by profession and some have an awesome combo of passion and profession both. What subjects do you cover? Oh.. there are plenty.. You should think what subject you can cover perfectly. You can write your best where you are most interested in. If I say, I cover medical subjects with great ease and accuracy, it will be of no use to you if you are coming from a finance interest. I would advise you to look into what you can write the best and with all your passion and perfection. However, there are many common and general subjects like sports, health, reviews, travel etc where anybody can do if try nicely. What types of writing do you cover? Again, there are many. From general to sales oriented. Teaching and intructional to interactive and conversational. This is what I think for now or I can even pop up again once I am done with some deadlines. Google everything! Research & Read.. You will find many blogs on how to start freelancing and how to go far. Good luck!
I think you misunderstood my questions, i'm just basically asking how members of the forum started out, what they are writing about, just general interest really, not HOW TO start freelancing. As i said in my original post, im already doing approx 15 hours a week. Thanks Grant
Hmm.... I didn't misunderstand your questions What I said is to read and see around what people are writing about. Most have signatures revealing all and many of them have blogs too that really help ( I personally read many) It is always better to analyze first than to ask. Though few writers that are doing good may happily tell how they started and what they are writing upon mostly. What I notice is either one go for changing priorities in market or stick to personal niche writing. Both have their own advantages.
How long have you been writing for? Since grade school. Professionally? Since I was 18. Almost 10 years ago. (Time flies!) How did you get into freelance writing? I started at 18 with writing an ebook and articles for low, low pay. I didn't know what I was doing and I didn't intend to become a writer. At the time it was money sitting on my tush at home. Eventually I figured out this freelancing thing wasn't too bad, so I pulled out some books from the local library and read articles online on how to write. What subjects do you cover? The SEO companies that I write for want everything. On my list this week: wedding favors, picking a health insurance broker, weight loss tactics. I have a particular interest in writing about businesses and marketing, real estate, etc. What types of writing do you cover? Content, copy, press releases, I used to do ebooks but not so much any more. I write occasional articles for magazines when I have the time. That was fun!

I've been writing for a long, long time. Practically since I could hold a pen. Not professionally of course. When I was in middle school, I wrote editorials that were published in our local newspaper, then in high school, I did some work on our school paper. I majored in Creative Writing and Journalism while I was in college. I never considered a career in anything else; writing has always been my first career priority. However, I do have a minor degree in Childhood Education; I think if I'd like to go into teaching later on in life. Much later. It would be a great job to settle down with. I cover everything, and I never say no, just because it's something I haven't written about before. I love to learn; part of writing with skill is constant learning, and research. Anything else is stagnation. As far as "types" of writing goes, pretty much anything that requires text. I can also do some basic HTML.
