How did I get to the top of MSN

I have a new client site. It's only been up for three weeks. It has maybe three sites linking to it.

For a very competitive phrase, that site is now 3 out of 10,986 in MSN

It makes no sense unless new sites start at the top and drift down.

macdesign, is it possible that the term isn't as competitive as you might have thought?

"Very competetive" and "10,986 results" probably shouldn't appear in the same sentence =)

Maybe it's some sort of niche, care to share the url and kw?

Ok, it's not 3 out of 2,546,353 :) but I told the guy it would be difficult to get good ranking for that phrase

But it surprised me considering it's just a quick little effort to help someone out.

    #www#toronto-homeopathy-centre#com# - [obfuscating the URL]

searching for homeopath Toronto or homeopathy Toronto

Also I noticed that Toronto homeopath has different results

And I'm not even in DMOZ :p

In my experience MSN seems to have a tendancy to get you on high and then slowly filter you out on later passes if the content is not as relative as it thought at first.

Google seems to do the opposite, assumes you have no relavancy, and slowly investigates to see if in fact your site is relavant.

Yahoo is a guy sitting in a dark room laughing maniacally while reviewing my sites, and gleefully deleting my Directory submissions.

of course my experience may vary fro myour own. ;)

I think that MSN gives a high weight to keywords in the domain name. One of my domains is on the second page of a search that has 17 million results. I have not optimised for it and I think it is because the domain contains the keyword. Anyone else see this?

Your domain contains your keywords and could be giving you a big boost.

IMO, currently MSN "loves" backlinks more than anything else.

This is interesting, the structure of the site is great first of all. The spiders find H text right away followed immediately but more text with no clutter in the way, doing a backlink check now, normally msn loves good neighborhoods meaning a popular site is being followed to yours.

it is about the sites linking to it as well, and it has no outgoing ones to any bad neighborhoods. Hang with good clean sites ...
