Don't be confused. The link: operator only reports a very small sample of the links Google knows about. It does not list them all.

To see most of the links Google has found for your website, see Google Webmaster Tools & check the backlinks report. (You can only access this report for websites you own, though.)

    For instance:
    link:www.emptymirrorbooks.com only reports 165 links.
but Google webmaster tools shows that there are 2272 links to that page.

    cheers ~

    Site is pr2 here.

They count as far as there are no "rel=nofollow" tags, like it is in DP, but its better buy quality links and submit your pages /deep links/ in some articles.

You may have had only one link before... But with this thread, you'll have two! :)

I know some others have mentioned it, but more and more I'm hearing that traffic is playing a role in pagerank...

Its impossible to get pagerank without links. Pagerank is based entirely on links but ranking and serps are based on a variety of things.

I'm with bestoptimized, there's no way to get PR without links since the definition of PR is link value across the web. It's all relative to other sites too, so as time goes on your PR will most likely drop if you don't keep growing in links, but you can't really drop from 0 can you? :)

You can get PR1/2 without links, but that value won't stay longer.

Off of the top of my head I'd monetize that domain like this:

    Brand:
    'Highest Paid'

    Product:
A blog and forum about the highest paid professions, sports stars, celebrities, and business people.... Current news, video clips, community

    Why?:
People are fascinated with how much money others make AND with the people that make it. You'd have no trouble getting people to the site as the topic would be very interesting. Keeping them there and getting them to return will depend on the quality of the content.

    Monetize?:
    - At a minimum Google ads would probably do well because of the celebrity addicts, as well as, other's desire to make a lot of money.
    - affiliate programs related to high paying jobs, wealth building, starting a business, etc...
    ---------------

Or you could just give me the domain.

I show pr2 although that is meaningless when that low. The value is the Highest Paid domain. It's 2 words that are great attention getters. Let me know if you want help. It wouldn't be too hard to put something up and in 90 days have a PR5 or so.
