And please don't say luck. I want to know what made Google the power house it is today. I know that some of you may have tried to create your own SE. So any advice you would like to give to this subject is welcomed. Success or failure. Tell me your story.

Luck did play a part of it, google built a great search engine and was able to get Yahoo to use it which then they took the data from yahoo and made google better.

They were at the right place at the right time.

They have a chronological line of stories how it all began somewhere on google. I don't have a link right now, but if you'll search around you'll find it quickly.

That's right...Larry Page and Sergey Brin created Google as a research project at Stanford University. The original algorithm was intended to index and rate the pages on the internet for academicians. The commercial potential was realized when the Adsense program was added-even more innovative in the way that it brought monetization to the independent webmaster.

Google is run by smart people with vision. You can't create that in a boardroom.

That's why pretenders like Cuil fail.

Well, they weren't "google" from the beginning. I believe there was a typo, to make them be called "google"

And, at the time, there weren't very much competition for anything on the web.

I think alot has had to do with their approach as soon as they saw this was going to be extremely profitable. Instead of thinking profit first, they knew that a quality product would last a long time and be #1. Yahoo Search is good as well, but there's so many ads and (I hate to admit this) the results just aren't as good and reliable.
