How did DP get so popular?

Everyone wants to know how to get forums popular, how to start and how to make a forum succeed.

I am wondering this myself, and thought what better way to understand how to promote a forum than to see how DP became so popular in the first place.

I am under the impression the forum started off through the owner, who to my recollection is called "Shaun" did he promote the forum on his own?
Also when the forum was first started, when ever that was, was it an untouched market niche forum, or was it already saturated?

Well to tell you the truth DP does not offer anything that any other webmaster forum can't offer. So simply it got big because of couple of things:

    - good management
    - advertisement
    - it allows you to add your adsense to your posts (that a big plus)
    - simple luck! (just like myspace, facebook, digg, etc got so popular) LUCK!

Now it's only going to get more and more popular because it already hit the stage when it goes from Level 1 to Level 2. Once you hit that stage you will just keep on getting bigger. Rich get richer!

One simple fact drew me here and has kept me at Digital Point since 2005 — that is, webmasters with more knowledge than I had were willing to share their knowledge on the forum. That really spoke to me. I try to return the favor whenever I can.

The concept of the forum was different to other forums on the net s it attracted people to it very quickly. This comes down to marketing experience and many other factors.

    - Business Plan
    - Advertisement
    - Word of Mouth
    - Luck

I guess its all of our dreams once in our lives to own a popular forum or site.

I'm relatively new to this forum, so I'm not sure about its history but I know that a lot of what makes (and keeps) a forum popular are the people who participate in it. The Copywriter's board, for example, is full of people who are friendly and knowledgeable and like to talk about their work. People keep coming back here because they are given the opportunity to learn, teach and--as an added bonus, build a little bit of an income!

That's what makes most forums popular--a friendly atmosphere. One person finds a forum, thinks its interesting and tells, say five friends about it. Those five friends each tell five more friends...you can see how quickly a good (or bad) reputation can spread!

Yeah I was also wondering this. Its just good management (though I barely see the mods/admins) and luck. And of course the great members. Plus DP doesn't look incredibly good. I could make a better skin for DP. And the main site is ugly!

Yeah i find that funny Thirteen, i love the simplicity of DP however for a forum about webmasters/design it does not look amazing. But thats what i love about it,i prefer it this way than any other. It is suprising how the management never changed the theme to make it look more modern and well basically cheap looking.

    Hope it never changes.

Some interesting stuff here, so mainly it was luck.

I was on other sites for a while then heard about DP. I joined to see what it was all about then realized the huge amount of information, people from all walks of life, and the constant activity here. So I can't say much for the beginning but I believe a little of what I said was there from the start and it helped build it to what it is today.

As mentioned here already the one thing I find very good about this forum is that we are all willing to help each other out.

Obviously people won't tell others how they make $XXXX a month but they will give essential advice for people to get on track.

Since I've been here I have never been on any other forum like this one.
