Yes but many links are on a monthly plan, so...after all this time...how much do they spend on text links??

    $15.000/month?

Money is a HUGE factor, you can spend all the link exchange, link baits, seo tactics that you want, without even some $$ forget a PR6.

Sounds like they had a big budget, maybe that helped.

The nature of business on the web through the eyes of most webmasters is quite different from offline businesses.

In an offline business, owners usually get a loan for a large sum of money to startup, and will use that money as well as money made continuously putting it back into their business. So for the first couple years, their businesses lose money.

If you told the average webmaster at DP to go get a loan at a bank for two hundred thousand dollars, invest 10,000 a month in promotion of a site as well as all revenue for two years, they would think you were crazy.

People want something for nothing on the web, but this is rarely possible. It happens, but not very often.

My guess, and it is only a guess, is that Chris, Jeff, etc. take a similar approach. They may not need the loans because of previous business ventures (software, link brokerage, etc.), but they take the same long term approach of losing money in the short term, but building something useful and valuable in the long term.

Most of us, myself included, don't treat our sites in this way and that is the reason for limited success.

Good customer service is pivotal in most big businesses. Good customer service is something I have always provided for my clients. It's what keeps clients returning for more business. They like your conversational skills, your ability to resolve any problems that arise quickly and efficiently, and most importantly, service with a smile :)

Out of the thousands of clients I have dealt with over the years. I have only had to be stern and direct with a few clients that were ruthless, rude and arrogant, and way out of line.

I guess Jeff and Chris would be doing nothing different here. They are there for the long term.

    Well done guys!

    Col :)

Unlike me, who spends his online money on booze and gamblin' (did I mention women tch tch), these two good guys spend them listing revenues on buying links, lotsa links. They see a good site selling links and they be the first one to PM, if they are online, and they be online mostly.

And perhaps they never started out with loads of marketing money. They been patient all along.. putting the money that the directories generated into the directory promotion and link building.

And any directory where they be not listed :)

And as a nice PR campaign, organic?? .. AH that article on diebetesblog by searchenginejournal , but that article sure did a good PR for ALIVE and AVIVA at the footnote. I mean it was a nice PR (not pagerank)

Can anyone put a guesstimate as to the worth of AVIVA and Alive?
And what could be the revenue look like :)

There are only a few directories out there like Alive and Aviva.
I think with a good campaign, and even imitating the two, there is room for more such directories.

But Man, getting a PR of 7 (strengh of 7.5) takes a LOT of organic link building. You can't just go out and buy a million links.

And hey, can't you just buy so many links to a Mesothelioma site :) instead :)

I think original funding is important, but also the dedication and effort are as important....

But you can't get rich without working hard.
