how deep?

    Is it okay to have articles 3 directories down (www.domain/1/2) ?

    Also, is it a good idea to have your articles as an index page in a sub dir.? for example (www.domain/foodphotography/index.html)

    Is one tactic better than another?

    It's more about your linking structure than it is about where a page lives in your directory structure. Your articles can live anywhere and still rank equally as well so long as you link to them from the same places.

    I prefer to include directory name in URL when I know the same page doesn't belong to 2 directories. Otherwise breadcrumbing can always give a great internal linking structure.
