How come the United States is the only country without a name?

Other countries have names: Germany, Australia, China, Ireland. You can't call the US "America" since that's the name of the content, not the country. How come we don't get a real name? Any nominations?

Well our name is the United States of America. But I believe for a singular name we should just be Google.

    Yeah...."AMERICA"!

None of the other (so-called) Americas matter anyway. We're the real America!

That's why they call us, "Americans"

You could argue that about any country name that is descriptive...

    United Kingdom
    United Arab Emirates
    North Korea
    South Korea

Our founding fathers were just too lazy to think of something original. :)

States, just like provinces in Canada, departments in Colombia and cantons in Switzerland, constitute many countries' main political subdivisions. In America (the continent) alone, we have the "United States of Mexico," the "United States of Venezuela," the "United States of Argentina..." and the "United States of America."

Sadly, most "Americans" (US-ites) do not know the difference between a country and a continent... As an example: Europe is a continent. Germany, England and France are countries within that continent. Properly, America is a continent, with examples of American countries being Canada, the U.S., Mexico, Costa Rica, Venezuela, Perú, Argentina, etc.

"Americans" (US-ites) are irremediably used to calling their mother land by the name of their continent. Only a very small number of US-ites know that theirs is the only country that never got baptized with an official name. "United States" is not really a country's name either, although it is certainly far more acceptable than plain "America."

Unlike Argentinians (and Chileans, Peruvians, Colombians, Mexicans, etc.), people from all over Europe, Asia, Australia and Africa also associate the term "America" with the patch of land that's south of Canada and north of Mexico, not with the continent that Columbus discovered for the Spanish crown in 1492.

The above is true to the best of my knowledge, as is the fact that this is not going to ever change.

For us Colombian Americans, for instance, listening to a US-ite, a European, an Australian or an African use the term America like they do, we just have to accept that there are two (2) totally different ways of using the word America:

The "American" way... and the correct way.

If you live in the US, you are a Colombian-American.

If you live in British Colombia, you are British-Colombian.

Get 5 DVD's Of Your Choice For $1 Each at ColumbiaHouse.

    Otherwise you are a Colombian.

I generally hate responding to super old threads but I believe this one warrants a response.

Believe it or not this used to the be the United States of America. It used to be a number of states aligned together, today its states that are controlled by a huge federal government. The states would make laws that controlled parts of government not mentioned in the Constitution, today the Federal government uses bureaucracy to control every part of government and complete ignore its true responsibilities.
