I agree with making great content for your site so that people backlink to you. However, it's chicken and egg because you need traffic from links and search engine before people find you and link to your site. I think you'll need to backlink initially unless you want to spend money on other types of marketing.

 

What you are trying to accomplish is impossible you should do some research on SEO.

 

You can also structure your internal linking in order to increase your rankings. For example, if there are certain keyword phrases you want to rank for, you can create internal links to the page you want to rank high on Google. These links can be placed in the navigation, footer, breadcrumb links, or within the content.

It is not possible to increase page rank without link building. Thats just the way googles algorithm is. So linkbuilding away!

IF you don't build links and promote your site no one will be able to find your site to link back to you. You need to build links until your site starts to snowball and you will no longer need to build links. IF you have good content.

 

The way i have made it to the second page of google is by link exchanges, i think it would be very difficult and it probably wouldn't last for long if you didnt use link exchanges..

 

You can build backlinks in many ways. Use the search bar on this site, for starters.
Commenting on do-follow blogs has been said to be one good way, but spamming will get your comments deleted.
Provide plenty of good advice, with a link to an article on your site regarding the same niche as the blog post.

This thread is the first I'd heard of using Adwords to boost PR.

1. You need backlinks to increase PR.
2. You can be in the top with PR 0, without backlinks in some specific condition. Rank high must not always related to PR.

usually forum site can get PR without too many link building, provided your forum is pretty famous that people want to link to your forum.
